How To Update Your Home For Spring

We’ve spoken a lot about updating your wardrobe for spring (here and here) lately, however we’ve somehow managed to skip over our humble abodes and how to breath new life into them come spring. Like your wardrobe and body, your home needs a little sprucing up when daylight stretches into the early evening and the temperature soars towards 30 degrees. To help you on your merry home decorating way, we’ve joined forces with Bed Bath N’ Table‘s brand new Fortitude Valley concept store and have created your go-to guide to help you update your home for spring with everything from patterns and texture to bedding, napery and bathroom supplies. Decorating your home doesn’t have to be a chore, so have fun reinventing for the new season.

The new Bed Bath N’ Table store is located on James Street, Fortitude Valley and is a 700 square metre retail space full of homewares, decor and furnishings for every style and budget. The store houses the Bed Bath N’ Table exclusive Morgan & Finch product range, as well as collections from Cotton House, Sanderson, Harlequin, Glasshouse, Mint Home and Riedel, just to name a few. Join us as we say farewell to flannelette sheets, heavy blankets, plush rugs and neutral tones and welcome bright colours, interior decoration, floral features and clashing prints with open arms. Here’s the pieces you need and the trends to follow…

Colours – Spring encourages us to move away from warm tones and towards cool hues and bright colour palettes that give your home a fresh vibe for spring. Blue is the hue of choice at the moment, with aqua and teal frontrunners of the colour family. If blue isn’t your thing, opt for pops of untraditional pastel such as mint, tangerine and lavender to create little vignettes of colour that instantly give your home an update. Whether you want to make a statement with colour or use it to complement the space, be sure to pick a colour scheme and stick to it.

Bath – Cozy towels are ideal for every season, because there’s nothing better than jumping out of the shower and smothering yourself in a fresh towel that hugs you back. The Izmir Bath Towel set by Morgan and Finch is perfect for spring; I’ve spotted quite a few Turkish-inspired bath towels with funky patterns and fringing lately, so these are a must. The blue, aqua and teal theme continues into the bathroom too, so add pops of your favourite blue hue with towels, a bath mat, candle or vase. If your bathroom is predominantly white it’s easy to create a whole new space with a few simple, carefully curated accessories. Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsRose Gold/Copper – Unless you’ve been hiding out in no mans land, you would have noticed a fascination with rose gold and copper at the moment, especially in homewares, stemming from the industrial-style theme. From candles and pot plants to lamps, fixtures and accessories, rose gold is here and it’s here to stay. Ladies with a home office – you need to know about this Morgan & Finch copper desk lamp – it’s what #girlboss dreams are made of. Keep in mind that there is such thing as too much rose gold, so splash your home with this metallic hue, but don’t saturate it.

Lounge – When the warmer months arrive we often find ourselves gathered in the loungeroom rather than curled up in bed, so a light throw rug to drape across your bare legs is a great addition to the lounge room in this transpersonal period. Not only is it practical, a throw rug and pillow combination is the perfect way to create a new colour scheme in a room. This decorative element works incredibly well if your couch is a timeless colour like brown, black, white or grey.

Texture – Spring is all about experimentation, so step outside of your comfort zone and pair things together that you normally wouldn’t. Clashing textures are a great way to show style and sophistication in a subtle way, so pop those fluffy cushions next to the cotton one, alongside a faux fur one for good measure. The rule for clashing textures is the same as clashing prints – ensure all of the elements go together and are connected by one thing, whether that be complimentary colours, size or shape.Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsCandles – If you don’t already have a collection of unburned candles, now is the perfect time to stock up on some fragrant burners to fill your home with. Cute tealight holders are perfect for a dinner party centre piece and a brass holder with cutouts makes a great reflection on the wall. Whether it’s an everyday candle or one for a special occasion, there’s something about spring and candles that goes hand in hand.

Wall Art – Bring a burst of colour to a room with eye-catching artwork to celebrate the beginning of the new season. There’s a great range of canvas prints here that will get you in the mood for the summer months ahead, or if you’re feeling sentimental, get a family photo printed on a canvas. It’s a great way to add colour and decoration and also creates a statement.

Dining – Spring is the season for balmy nights, dinner parties and friendly gatherings, so make sure you are prepared in advance with a new season dinner set, cutlery and glassware for when your guests arrive. Colourful tumblers and a punch bowl are a must for spring, as is a cheese board and matching knives. For your everyday dining needs, a good quality set in white is a timeless staple for every kitchen. If you are looking for something with a bit more oomph, this set is gorgeous and reminds me of adventures in Europe through summer. While the weather no longer requires a warm pot of tea before bed, that doesn’t mean you have to break up with your favour brew until March – no way. Spring inspired teacups and side plates like this set are perfect for making your hot drink spring appropriate.Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsPineapples – If you thought pineapples were oh so 2014 you might want to skip this one, because pineapples are making a reappearance for spring/summer for all of your homewares and deco needs. White and block coloured not so much, but pineapples in brass, copper and gold (like these), yes please!

Plant Life – If you’re anything like us and have found yourself caught up in the terrarium trend, add some plantlife to your home in celebration of the new season. Outside the flora will start to bloom any day now, so reflect that on the inside with a colourful terrarium, structured bonsai or faux greenery like these little guys. If you have room and happen to have a handyman in the house, create a vertical herb and vegetable garden in your outdoor area for some greenery that you can actually use – then pat yourself on the back, you efficient and sustainable creature.

Napery – Like we said, spring is all about lavish soirees, so make sure you are equipped with some fantastic napery so you can woo your guests and earn the title of hostess with the mostess. Bed Bath N’ Table have a gorgeous range (here), all in pastel hues and shades of blue of course. Think special occasion placemats, cloth napkins and patterned table cloths with gorgeous crockery and glassware on top.

Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsBedding – When it comes to bedding, nothing beats crisp white sheets, especially in spring. Ditch your flannelette and opt for a lightweight fabric instead, and when it comes to your quilt cover, we love a neutral colour accompanied by a colourful array of pillows and a throw rug to engage the eye. If you’d rather something bold, a statement quilt cover is great, but just make sure it is soothing and doesn’t make the room feel cluttered and claustrophobic. On average, we spend one third of our lives asleep, so uncomfortable bedding that is unappealing to the eye is not an option.

Get Crafty – Classic country style is making a comeback as an interior trend of the coming season, and with it comes a craft movement. Make like the ladies of the Country Women’s Association of Australia and give your nest a homey touch with some DIY and homemade craft pieces. It could be something simple like collecting mismatching photo frames and creating a gallery style feature wall or something that requires time, patience and skill, like a hand crocheted rug.

Prints – Just like bright colours and texture, patterns are a great way to breathe new life into your home come spring. Have fun with your interior styling and opt for a quirky patterned throw rug like this Mr Fox Throw by Harlequin, or celebrate the season with some flower power inspired pieces. Ombre and dip dyed finishes are also trending for the season ahead. When adding prints to your home for spring, take inspiration from tropical environments, use your prints as a decorative element and don’t be afraid to mix and match. Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsMix Old With New – Another big trend we’ve noticed at the moment is the practice of mixing old with new to create a ‘lived in’ feel. Don’t discard your old pieces of furniture, and definitely don’t put your Nanna’s old chest of drawers on the sidewalk just yet. Use your  vintage pieces with new elements, adding something old and something new to create a modern look with character. There’s always a way to bring an old piece into the future, so look to homewares specialists and interior publications for inspiration.

Fresh Flowers – The farmers market season doesn’t stop for the winter months, but there is no denying that it is the perfect time to make the most of this gorgeous weather and do your grocery shopping al fresco style. While you’re there,  pick up a bunch of beautiful blooms for a fresh update. You’ll also need a vase collection – Abstract and repurposed shapes are popular at the moment, so opt for something unusual such as a bud vase with an ombre finish, a roll top vase, a collection of glass milk bottles, hanging bottle garlands or the good old mason jar. Whatever you choose, make sure you have a few in odd shapes and sizes for a quirky cool finish.

Outdoor Areas – As the weather warms it’s time to move the entertaining outdoors so there’s no better time to give the space an update. Whether you are working with a large or small space, continue the colour theme you’ve adopted indoors and dress it with accessories that are weather-proof to avoid disappointment. Add colour, texture and patterns for spring and new plants to the garden for a mini transformation. If you’re after a feature piece for your outdoor oasis, we can’t go past a suspended egg chair filled with cozy pillows and a gorgeous throw for afternoon reading sessions. Update Your Home For Spring | Brisbane ThreadsWhether your style is bohemian chic, monochrome sophistication or classic country, breathe new life into your home by adding a few spring-inspired interior elements into your humble abode. Bed Bath N’ Table have 8 stores in Brisbane (find out where here) so pop in to your local retailer for inspiration and start collecting an army of decorative pieces to instantly update your home for spring – the possibilities are endless.
