Umami - Brisbane Threads

‘Umami (/uˈmɑːmi/), or savoury taste, is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness).’ Thanks to George, Matt and Gary (aka those Masterchef boys) Umami is part of our food vocabulary, but I still found myself unable to describe Umami; instead just going with ‘it is Umami.’

Umami is not only the mysterious fifth taste; it is also the name of one of Brisbane’s tastiest restaurants located at the top of the China Town Mall, Fortitude Valley. Umami Bar & Asian Tapas isn’t the new kid on the China Town block but it has had a menu and venue makeover and it is fabulous.

Brisbane Threads got to experience the relaunch of Umami along with Brisbane’s food blogger & influencer community and it was nothing short of exceptional. Umami’s signature Bubble-Chi-Lada (piña colada slushy with tapioca pearls) was oh-so-tasty (kind of like an alcoholic Slurpee) and oh-so-moreish. Multiples may have been consumed!

Together we grazed over tapas style starters and gorged over share plates of deliciousness. Some of the highlights were the Salmon Tartare, the Vietnamese chicken slaw and the BBQ Duck Pancakes. Designed to share these meals were tasty, complex and well, at some points of the night, had us all saying ‘it is umami.’

We also tried the Smoking Eye of The Dragon cocktail which was served in a teapot and again is designed as a sharing-is-caring-cocktail. With Spiced Passionfruit Syrup, Peach Liqueur, White and Gold rums, Pineapple and Orange, Lime and Sugar this cocktail went down a treat!

The night ended with three shared desserts which were perfect as it meant we could try a little bit of each one.

The interior was energised, electric & retro Asian-inspired (think an entire wall of cute lucky waving cats) and even had a massive lucky neon cat (passing on much good fortune to all that dine at Umami). It is fair to say Brisbane Threads hearts Umami.
