These days it seems The Fox Hotel is no stranger in the vocab of the token millennial. It is the home of popular neon haunt Dandy’s Bar after all. Perhaps though it’s best-kept secret is right, under, your, nose. Trocadero Long Bar is the darling downstairs space on Melbourne Street, just a skip and hop from Fish Lane and situated perfectly to make this your newest after TAFE and uni hang. With word of a new dessert menu, three girlfriends and I piled into the Fox on a stormy Saturday with our sights set firmly on hearty wet-weather comfort food. Along with a warm sense of hospitality from everyone we encountered, that is exactly what we found.
PIZZA & BURGER HAPPY HOUR?!
Yes, you read that right. The Trocadero Long Bar menu is chocka-block full of all-day American classic eats curated and cooked by a culinary expert Michael Stillman with over 20 years experience in the Australian food-scene. On every day of the week, both burgers and pizzas are apart of a range of happy hours, where the burger and fries combo are just $5 and the menu’s 18 doughy pizzas are just $4 each. Unreal.
GIVE THESE A GO!
The burgers are served with crispy shoestring fries, with an addictive crunch that leaves a pang of disappointment when they’re all gone. Good news is you’re left with an accompanying selection of unique burger faves. We loved the Chicken Foxtrot – a buttermilk fried chicken burger with cheese, chipotle mayo and slaw. The Texas Tommy was also a winner across the board. It’s the menu’s take on the classic cheeseburger (but better). I personally LOVED the clever vegetarian option so totally give the Mushroom Sling a go! It’s a mushroom and halloumi combo with a little jalapeño kick. We adored the easy-to-share pizza’s with lots of international nods like the Chinese style roast Peking Duck and the classic Italian Calabrese. Not to mention a gorgeous selection of fruity cocktails. My favourite was an apple and cinnamon combo, which smelt like a warm apple pie!
ALONG CAME THE DOUGHNUT FRIES…
When you think it can’t get any more satisfying, along came doughnut fries! Certainly, the smell of fresh pastries has me majorly weak, and the waft of freshly baked goods was alive and in the air with the spread of dessert empanadas and delicious doughnut fries that graced our table! You’ll find the warm pastries served with perfectly matched fillings. Think a seasonal berry mix with raspberry mascarpone, white chocolate and cream or maybe caramelised banana with dark chocolate is more you? Either way, you seriously cannot go wrong here.
