How To Host A Summer Soiree

posted by Teagan West December 23, 2014 0 comments

The festive season is well and truly here. Our party dresses are on, gifts are wrapped, platters are prepared and Instagram is bursting with happy snaps. So what makes a good summer soiree? Here are 5 things you MUST have.

Something ice-cold and refreshing is a must, especially for us Brisbane folk who swelter through the festive season. A refreshing iced tea or fruit punch is perfect for a summer BBQ, and a local wine or sangria wouldn’t go astray. Our picks are a Pomegranate iced tea from T2 or the locally-crafted, ready to drink SKA Sangria. SKA Sangria is a Spanish-inspired masterpiece blend with 90% of ingredients being Australian wines, juices and essences. A combination by Brisbane business Spanish Boutique Beverages that has been fine-tuned for three years to perfectly fuse Australian and Spanish culture.

Cheese, cheese and more cheese! It comes as no surprise that we love a good pre-dinner cheese platter, or one that can be shared over afternoon drinks. And nothing beats a DIY cheese platter with all of the trimmings you enjoy most. Think 5 cheeses, salami, grapes, crackers, bread sticks, dips and something sweet on the side. For the best, stop in to Black Pearl Epicure in Fortitude Valley and gather supplies – they’ve got a huge selection of hard and soft cheeses and so many options for that something sweet accompaniment (did someone say Valrhona chocolate?). The staff are super, so they’ll help you with matching and send you off with buzzing tastebuds. Aesthetically, this is one of the best looking cheese platters we ever did see, all the way from Sirromet Winery.

One word: MOZI. Pick up some cute homewares, kitchenware and table decorations at MOZI to make your soiree one-of-a-kind. The new Gelato collection is the epitome of summer soiree! Check out our post on DIY table decor here.

For gift ideas and inspiration for any occasion and budget, check out our gift guides for the gals, guys, Mum and Dad. The hardest decision will be deciding which one gift to give. Alternately, who doesn’t love a homemade treasure of deliciousness?! Make your guests some tasty take-home packages of sweet treats and healthy bites – at the moment I’m loving guilt-free bliss balls for ultimate snacking and gifting (these ones are the Strawberry Bliss Balls by Pete Evans).

Picnic Essentials for the Weekend

posted by Teagan West November 21, 2014 1 Comment

The weekend is almost here! And to celebrate, we’ve put together the ultimate picnic must-have checklist to ensure you’ve got everything you need for the most stylish picnic of them all.

First up, you need a carry-all picnic basket and bright picnic rug. We’re loving this superb basket bag by The Market Basket Co. for its stylish shape and sturdy functionality. When paired with this gelato-coloured picnic rug by MOZI, the foundations of a good picnic are set.

As Brisbabes we know the power of the Queensland sun is unrelenting (yes even in Spring), so this wide brim hat, sunglasses and natural sunscreen combo is essential. I’m swooning over the Lack of Color range of fedoras and wide brim felt hats!

To top it all off, you need some tasty drinks (cider or sangria is our go-to) and a great food spread (fruit, sweets, baked goods, dips), mason jars and fabulous plates, a polaroid to capture everything and a selection of magazines to flick through when siesta time lolls around. Sweet wheels are an added bonus!

Not sure where to go? Head to one of our top 27 picnic spots and lookouts in Brisbane once you’ve packed your bag of goodies. Kangaroo Point, Roma Street Parklands, City Botanic Gardens, New Farm Park, the Wynnum/Manly Foreshore, Bulimba…. you name it, we’ve thought of picnic-ing there!

What To Pack For An Island Escape

posted by Teagan West October 30, 2014 1 Comment

Summer is here! Well technically it’s still only Spring, but this last week has definitely felt like Summer and I don’t know about you, but I’ve been dreaming up a summer island getaway for many months now. I’ve mentally packed my lightweight luggage and am set to jet off to the soft sand and crystal blue ocean of Hawaii, Fiji, The Maldives, Thailand, Bali, Vanuatu… anywhere with ‘island escape’ written all over it.

But what to pack?! I’m a chronic over-packer so I’ve narrowed it down to this carefully curated list of must-pack items that will ensure your short flight is a breeze so you can hit the sand running upon your arrival in paradise. Get packing, the cocktails and sun await!

Comfort is key no matter how long the flight is, so I always reach for some comfy pants and a great scarf to stay toasty when the cabin cools. Basic cosmetics, especially moisturiser and lip balm are a must, and I’m loving Zoe Foster Blake’s new Go-To range of cosmetics and skincare to fight chapped lips and dry skin en route. Lightweight luggage is also important for your carry on, and this neon green 4 wheel cabin suitcase from Luggage Direct is perfect to keep your belongings safe, secure and organised. All your tech gadgets can then be thrown in, and don’t forget a good book or your favourite magazines!

Pictured: American Tourister By Samsonite at Luggage Direct, Lips by Go-To, iPhone by Apple, Go Travel Padded Travel Case at Luggage Direct, Birkenstock Arizona Sandal Black by General Pants, Marc by Marc Jacobs Small Cosmetics Case, Elle Australia Magazine November 2014, Sole Society Plaid Scarf, Frends Headphones and J.Crew Cardigan Sabine Pant.

An island escape calls for bright colours, clashing patterns and denim shorts. A good swimsuit (or 4) is a necessity, and I love these ones from the Seafolly and ISOLA collections. I always pack far too many items of clothing, but you just can’t go past a printed playsuit for sunset cocktails and Havaianas on your feet (a cute pair of sandals wouldn’t go astray either!). Use a fake tan to get that summer glow pack post winter, and always pack a great hat and sunscreen lotion (30+ or 50+) to be sun safe. Most importantly though, you need a good, lightweight luggage case to get you from the airport to hotel and back again. This lightweight luggage hard case is perfect for keeping your shopping safe (yay!) and avoiding those hefty excess baggage fees upon your return. Plus it’s chic and pink, what more could you need!

What do you pack first for an island escape?

Rekorderlig Cider bottles the Australian Summer!

This post is long overdue, but I actually think perfect timing considering how nicely the weather has warmed up and now that Spring is upon us! We received a gorgeous picnic basket filled with goodies from our friends at Rekorderlig , set for us to taste their newest flavour ‘Pomegranate’. This delicious addition to the Rekorderlig family has been created specifically with the Australian palate in mind.

This distinctly unique flavour of crisp pear cider, beautifully blended with pomegranate, has a delicious summer fruit fragrance & is a perfect way to liven up your taste buds. Our serving tip is over ice with a wedge of lime for a delicious fresh summer taste. What I love the most is that it’s no fuss… the flavour speaks for itself, no need for mixers, shaking, stirring or bartending skills of any kind!

Pomegranate now features on many restaurant and cocktail bar menus, appealing to both the savoury and sweet palate. We spoke to Rekorderlig’s Marketing Manager, Nikki Langford who said, “We’re really excited to be launching Pomegranate Cider, the latest addition to our portfolio. Always looking to push the boundaries and create innovative flavours for every season, we believe that pomegranate is perfect for the summer”.

We agree, this picnic-perfect taste is pot on for Summer!

Rekorderlig Cider is crafted at the cider’s family owned fourth generation brewery in Vimmerby, Sweden, where it has been made since its first creation. Their full innovative flavour range includes, much-loved Strawberry-Lime, Apple-Guava, Passionfruit, juicy Wild Berries, crisp Pear, tropical Mango-Raspberry, Orange-Ginger, traditional Swedish-style Apple, Apple & Blackcurrant and now Pomegranate.

I think I just found my Summer beverage! xxx

A Fashionable Adventure with Beau In The Woods

posted by Teagan West February 12, 2014 0 comments

“You know that feeling when you go on holidays? That you can completely turn off, relax and just chill out?  That happy moment … Beau is about not over thinking anything but just creating wearable pieces that our girls feel good in.”

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 12.38.39 PM

That, our fashionable friends, was one of the many colourful responses I got from Kylie Dadson, who, despite conversing via email, effortlessly translated her lively nature and the equally vibrant travel-luxe aura that is Beau In The Woods, the label she founded and designs.

Since her first collection debuted in 2010 with just three styles, Kylie has climbed the ‘designer to watch’ ladder with ease thanks to the labels unique photographic prints and utterly wearable silhouettes that have a “sunny Queensland girl vibe” radiating from their very foundations.

This week we caught up with Kylie to have a chat about Beau, as she affectionately calls the always colourful label, its reason for being and of course those special prints.

Kylie said Beau In The Woods “was developed out of wanting to offer our customer something different to what we were buying off other (fabulous) designers… and grew from there,” with the label smoothly finding and defining its distinctive aesthetic.

Kylie said the labels quirky name represents a sense of adventure and a love of classic styles and prints inspired by wanderlust. “For me, Beau is the Love and In The Woods is the adventure of life. I think this probably sums up our customer too – they love life, they have a great sense of adventure and they love trying new things too,” she said.

It seems pretty self explanatory doesn’t it – the name, and subsequently the label, represent the epitome of a fashionable adventure, with trans-seasonal silk pieces that are “beautifully fabricated” and embellished with what Kylie describes as “wanderlust prints.”

And wanderlust inspired they are, with each piece purposefully designed to ooze summery vibes and ignite the travel bug within – a refreshing sight in an industry crowded with meaningless fast-fashion. In conquering the perils of the modern fashion industry Kylie has consistently developed exclusive photographic prints that arouse an involuntary swoon at the sight of each coveted piece and the tropical destination they transport you to.

beau in the woods

Each photographic print is the result of a creative collaboration between Kylie and another creative, one being her photographer stepfather Col Ellis who has given her five of his Gallery Twenty Seven studio works to use and develop into wearable art.

“I am pretty lucky, I have a great relationship with him and he is a beautiful person that is amazingly talented when it comes to capturing natural beauty,” she said of Col, who is an AIPP master of photography.

Intrigued, I asked about the collaboration process, wondering whether the photo came first or if it was the product of a thought-out concept and styled shoot. Her response made me laugh, as I soon realised the label was an extension of her happy-go-lucky vibe.

She said it works something like this… “Hey Col, you know (that) photo, I love, love, love it  … can I pretty please use it for one of my prints?” “Sure Kyles!” And presto, a new print is born.

While the working relationship between Kylie and Col is relaxed on the surface, it goes without saying that a great deal of hard work goes into each print collaboration that Kylie works on, perhaps even more so when local artists are involved.

Last year Beau In The Woods worked with Brisbane artist Matt Stewart on a New York City skyline inspired print for the YOU’RE THE CHRYSLER BUILDING collection and more recently Kylie said “a beautiful Byron based artist will be featured for our summer 14/15 collection,” although she stayed tight-lipped about the yet-to-be-named collaborator. Also, in the past and into the future, Kylie said she has enjoyed using photos from her own adventures, and has been inspired by and subsequently developed prints using the photographs of family and friends.

One particular trip to India last year has inspired a number of prints in the upcoming collections Kylie said, with photographs taken on the trip being used throughout 2014. “We have developed and produced 3 new print collections so far which we will be dropping over coming months,” with one potentially hitting the shelves this weekend – we can hardly wait to see what’s in store next!

“We’ll do jackets, pants and capes but our aesthetic is trans-seasonal silk pieces. Throw opaques on under a silk frock, add a knit and that’s our winter. You can then wear the same dress in summer with sandals. For us, we will be forever chasing summer, after all, it’s always summer somewhere in the world!”

After all, as the ‘about us’ tab of the official Beau in the Woods website proclaims – ‘Beau In The Woods is a destination where the lifestyle is tropical, the cocktails are a callin’ and a wanderlust daydream is always applauded.’

Not bad for someone who originally studied journalism and communications with the intention of working for a fashion magazine right?!

Check out Beau In The Woods online boutique here, or for the full experience visit them at their flagship store on James Street, Fortitude Valley, to live the magic of each print in person.

Solito joins the virtual-racks at Blue Bungalow

Brisbane-based online fashion house Blue Bungalow have rolled out the welcome mat for local label Solito, who relaunched earlier this month with their second summer collection, ‘The Moroccan Wanderer: from the Rif to Marrakesh’.

Solito, the creation of Brisbane duo Olivia Mills and Mary Zacharia, is right at home with fellow Queenslander Blue Bungalow, who this week released a medley of pieces from the label’s exotically inspired summer collection.

‘The Moroccan Wanderer: from the Rif to Marrakesh’ collection from Solito captures the colour and enchantment of a spellbinding journey through Marrakesh with rich ochre tones, exotic prints and fringed embellishments. My favourite is the burnt orange fringed poncho dress – I can imagine it thrown over a pair of togs after a dip in the beach, or accessorised with some nude heels and colourful jewellery for a Sunday BBQ. Love it!

Screen Shot 2013-10-04 at 6.12.02 AM

What I am EVEN MORE EXCITED ABOUT is the Blue Bungalow offers same day delivery in the Brisbane Metro area… a luxury historically only afforded to our southern counterparts! Is this the beginning of an online shopping revolution for us Brisbane fashionistas… I hope so!

Ask a Stylist: Buy. Keep. Store

Laura Stead

With Spring/Summer approaching, our wardrobes are getting a little out of hand… new pieces are coming in.. the old ones are being shoved to the back and deciding what we can mix with our new pieces is sending us batty! Time to bring in the experts!

Have you met Laura Stead? She is one of the gorgeous Westfield Chermside stylists who’s life purpose is to make your wardrobe and this season’s fashion make sense!

We posed the question to Laura: What SS pieces should we be buying, what pieces should we hold on to for Spring and what can be stored away once Winter is gone?

Here is a little insight from the stylist herself…

Top 5 pieces from SS12 trends shoppers should look for:

  1. Western-inspired piece – denim goes back with everything in your wardrobe, and will go from staple to trend next season thanks to Western. Personally my favourite is the denim shirt!
  2. A floral statement – blooming bouquets will be everywhere for spring summer, and are perfect for the warmer weather! Pencil skirts, tailored blazers and button-downs will be the most popular
  3. Sporty luxe trousers – stylish, comfortable and perfect for updating your basics and block-coloured blazers
  4. A fabulous retro ladylike dress – ladylike is back for another season and will be here to stay! Invest with a gorgeous dress and be ready for the racing season too!
  5. Stacked on tribal jewellery – bangles and oversized necklaces pick up on the boho trend we love every spring summer and are the most inexpensive way to experiment with new trends

Top 3 pieces shoppers should keep from AW12 for SS12

  1. Coloured jeans – are here to stay for another season! For SS12, you’ll be able to choose between neon brights and pastels, for all personal styles. Everyone should own a pair because you can wear them as a statement with all of the basics in your wardrobe, or use to mix with other trends like colour blocking.
  1. Peplums – were made famous in AW12 for their figure-fixing structure, ability to dress up and down and clevel frill that hides our tummy. They’ll be back in SS12 in the form of tops, skirts and dresses in neutral and block colours and the most popular prints.
  2. Metallic accessories – if you’re looking for a quick and stylish way to experiment with trends, metallic accessories is the way to go! Take baby steps with a sequin clutch or glittery heels before working your way up the ranks to sparkly blazers and skirts.

Items that should be stored – how should they be stored?

  1. Statement coat – AW12 was all about the statement winter coat, but of course we won’t be needing it for spring summer! If you invested in a classic coat, or something more “out-there” that just screams your personal style, be sure to store it away until next winter! Take it for a dry-clean, before storing it safely in a suit bag hanging in your closet.
  2. Chunky knits – were one of the biggest trends, namely because they are effortlessly stylish, and comfortable for busy fashionistas! Needless to say, something this handy will always come back in style! Store in clean, dry Space Bags or other vacuum bags to hide from dust over the next few months.
  3. 1960’s – was our favourite era this winter, in particular swing coats, woollen dresses and opaque stockings. As we move through to spring summer, it’s likely we’ll be steering more towards the 70’s and its boho vibe, but next year we will be seeing the cosy fabrics and tailored shapes of the swinging sixties once again.
Spring Summer Trends:
