Inika Organic Cosmetics Review

posted by Michaela Petrofes August 23, 2016 0 comments

Before discovering Inika I was pretty anti-makeup. Personally, I didn’t like the way it made my skin feel and all the hidden nasties, as well as the ethical damage on animals and the environment from certain beauty brands. Therefore I never ever wore it. I decided enough was enough and made the decision to ditch every single beauty product that I own and replace it all with organic, vegan products. This decision was influenced by a number of things – wanting to stop using products that tested on animals, negatively impacted on the environment and overall wanting to use products that were going to benefit my skin. In the process, I uncovered Inika Organic Cosmetics and my makeup routine went from non-existent to something I look forward to!

posted by Teagan West August 4, 2015 1 Comment

Oh how I love Beauty Tuesday!

This week though, is extra special. Want to know why? Well because you asked nicely here it is… WE MADE AN EBOOK and it’s 100% free to download over here! I can hear you minds ticking with glee, so I’ll give you all of the goss.

So, you all loved the last three instalments of Beauty Tuesday where we covered all things eco, natural and organic beauty to help you make the switch to a more wholesome beauty routine that is toxin-free and much better for your body (a green routine also works wonders on your skin if you need another reason). We covered body products, from lotions, moisturisers, tanning products and exfoliators here, then natural facial cleansers, moisturisers and makeup products here and then last week, we wrote about green hair products for washing, styling and treating here. I was a happy lass, you were a happy lass, everyone was a happy lass. So I pushed it further and compiled a snazzy little ebook for you all to enjoy (you can find it here)!

So, what will you find in this ebook I speak of? Natural and Organic Beauty eBook | Brisbane Threads

Everything you need to know about organic beauty products and natural beauty routines of course!

Natural & Organic Beauty (the ebook!) is filled with quotes, tips, products and advice to inspire you to switch up your current beauty collection to a more wholesome tribe of products that do good for your body and the earth. It’s got all of the stuff we spoke about during our natural and organic beauty series, plus bonus content, extra reviews, lots of flatlays and epic tips that will help you establish a natural beauty regime. But want to know the best part? We joined forces with Juliet who blogs over at Lace N Ruffles  to chat about her eco beauty journey. She’s transformed her cosmetic cabinet and given her beauty routine a complete eco makeover in the last 12 months so it’s all shades of green and clean. She’s on a mission to inspire everyone to detoxify their beauty products and opt for brands with a natural and organic ingredient list (check out some of her latest beauty reviews here). In our ebook, you can read about her eco beauty journey in ‘Tales of a Real-life Eco Beauty Warrior,’ learn about the products that she uses everyday to keep her skin healthy and glowing and, she even gave us some tips to inspire you to switch up your beauty routine. She’s one hell of a lady that Lace N Ruffles girl!

Beauty Tuesday: Organic Beauty Products For Your Face

posted by Teagan West July 21, 2015 1 Comment

Good morning and happy Beauty Tuesday for another week. Today we’re continuing on with last weeks eco-friendly, natural and organic beauty products theme, except today, we’re talking about ya face! Yep, we’re talking eco, au natural and organic beauty products for your gorgeous face, so if you’re having trouble finding the right products to lather or you have sensitive skin, here is a round-up of some of our favourites that will do good for your face, body and the planet. Here’s the verdict…

CLEANSERS: Since I started working on this feature a couple of weeks ago I’ve trialled 7 different cleansers and, as it turns out, they’re all pretty special. Here’s a quick wrap up: 1. Of course, cult favourite LUSH do a milky cleanser made from orchid, almond and other natural ingredients that works to cleanse and sooth. 2. The 100% Pure White tea cleaner smells exactly as it is labeled and is a good foam cleanser to have on hand in the shower as a first responder. It may dry your skin out a little, so have a good moisturiser on hand to follow with. 3Mukti Organics, with their three pronged approach (sustainable, ethical and organic) do a hydrating cleansing lotion for normal and dry skin that is certified organic and only contains the good stuff. 4Go-to‘s ‘Properly Clean’ cleanser by the very witty Zoe Foster Blake would have to be my ultimate favourite, the packaging is cute, the smell is peachy, it’s not tested on animals and it actually works. 5GAIA Skincare‘s Geranium and Palmarosa Creamy Cleanser is a great general cleanser and it’s ace at removing thick mascara when smothered over your eyelids and gently wiped. 6. Australian made MUSQ Cream Cleanser does what it says it will do and is vegan with a smooth consistency and a strong yet pleasant grapefruit scent. 7. The Deliciously Clean Butter Cleanser by Delicious Skin smells good enough to eat, but it is in fact a little pot full of a thick serum that cleanses, moisturises and soothes.

MOISTURISERS: To moisturise that gorgeous face of yours with only the good stuff, check out GAIA Skincare’s Lavender and Frankincense Facial Moisturiser, it’s quite thing and does the job well. As does the MUKTI Organics Hydrating Moisturiser which is the perfect travel size. I’m going to go all boss lady on you now and say ya’ll must moisturise morning and night with a good concoction made with natural ingredients. It not only improves the quality of your skin, it keeps it hydrated, tames inflammation and repairs and replenishes. Get to it ladies.

LIPS: I’ve been using ‘Lips’ by Go-to skincare for months now and I probably won’t stop. It’s the day time equivalent to Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment because it has a thinner consistency but still relieves sore, cracked and dry lips immediately. It’s the best dang $15 I ever did spend and it’s lasted me months despite applying multiple times a day. Did I also mention that Go-to products are all accredited by Choose Cruelty Free Limited and contain no nasties.

While on the topic of lips, I’m also diggin’ the Bloom Organics Soothing Lip Balm made with beeswax and shea butter. I don’t love that you have to put your finger in the goo to apply, but I do love that it doesn’t leave a bad taste on your lips and is nice and smooth, so it’s perfect for cracked or wind-burnt lips. I must also mention the incredibly smooth and utterly delicious LUSH lip range with every flavour including bubblegum, eggnog, honey, latte, mint and popcorn. They’re great for your lips, but should come with a caution: ‘May make you hungry or crave sweets.’

FACIAL TREATMENTS: Briese Botanicals, a new brand that I was thrilled to trial, fast became a favourite because of the brand’s philosophy to harvest the ancient gifts of the land, gorgeous packaging, luxurious products and they were founded by a clever lady on the Sunshine Coast (QLD representing)! The Healing Facial Masque is thick, wet and grey, resembling wet concrete rather than a skincare product, however once lathered on it is quite refreshing. Although it did feel like I’d had my face painted at the time, after a slick layer of moisturiser my face was feeling so good. The Eye Rescue Serum and Antioxidant Concentrate have also become part of my nightly ritual.

Some other fav facial treatments and serums that I’ve stumbled across include  Scentrelle’s Reverse Time Face Serum for anti-aging, and Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum and the MUSQ sea buckthorn and pomegranate revitalise serum. To work wonders while you sleep, La Mav’s Antioxidant Rich Nightly Repair Nectar and 100% Pure Super Fruits Eye Balm will do the trick.

For exfoliation, use GAIA Skincare Bergamot and Sandalwood Facial Exfoliant or pick up a LUSH fresh and natural face mask next time you are at a major shopping centre and have a little pamper session at least once a week to remove all the yucky stuff that builds up on your face.

MAKEUP: For good quality, effective makeup that is also eco-friendly, natural and organic, check out Inika and their range of pure, natural and Certified Organic makeup products and tools. Zuii Organic, also has a good range of organic makeup products and a large collection of mineral products, which are better for your skin than liquid based products. La Mav do a number of good mineral products too, and also an Organic BB Cream with natural sunscreen and anti-aging and moisturising ingredients so it’s a goodie to apply as a base under your makeup as it acts as a tinted moisturiser to even out complexion and cover minor imperfections. Biome, a market place for eco-friendly, Australia products, has a great range, and you should also check out Nourished Life, Adorn Cosmetics, Bare Blossom and Shop Naturally

Beauty Tuesday: Organic Beauty Products For Your Body

posted by Teagan West July 14, 2015 3 Comments

At Brisbane Threads HQ, this post has been in the works behind the scenes for a long time now. Like, a really long time. I wanted to make it perfect and give you as much information as possible, so I’ve been busy researching, testing, reviewing, styling and photographing for the last couple of weeks to bring you the first of three instalments on natural, eco-friendly and organic beauty products. This week we’re talking about beauty products for your bod, and the following weeks we’ll move on to products for your beautiful face and then hair.

So here we are, thanks for joining me!

I’ve been thinking about organic and eco-friendly beauty products a lot recently as I ‘grow up’ and see changes in my skin. I also really want to look after my body, you know the whole ‘treat it like a temple’ kind of thing. So eco-friendly and organic beauty products have been on my radar for some time now but I’ve strayed from trying anything new and blamed the cliche excuses like ‘it costs too much’ and ‘they’re so hard to find’ whenever I contemplated a switch to products with more natural ingredients.

So I did what any other lifestyle blogger would do and tried a bunch of products and googled (a lot) to bring you this round-up of natural, eco-friendly and organic beauty products. Let’s skip straight in to business shall we – here’s some great natural, eco-friendly and organic beauty products to turn to when it comes to your gorgeous bod.

In The Shower: Want to bring more natural and organic products into the shower with you? It’s not as hard as you think! GAIA Skin Naturals Australia does a great range that includes body washes that are soap and sulphate free and contain organic avocado oil, organic gingko biloba and organic chamomile extracts. They’re available in two scents – pink grapefruit and jasmine or lavendar and frankincense – and are suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive skin as they do not strip your skin of its natural protective oils. I’ve been using the pink grapefruit constantly for about three weeks now and it’s only just run out, which totally surprised me. There’s also the Nourish Naturals soap free wash that is formulated to cleanse and hydrate the skin with naturally derived ingredients. It is 100% natural and is free from sulfates, parabens, synthetics and artificial colours and fragrances, is made in Australia and is not tested on animals. Like the GAIA body wash, the Nourish Naturals is particularly great for sensitive skin. For more on shower products, stay tuned in the following weeks as we cover eco-friendly, narual and organic hair and face products – there’s heaps of options available and I can’t wait to tell you all about them!

For Your Skin: Delicious Skin is an all natural, vegan and cruelty free range of beauty products that are handmade and transparent from the naturally nourishing ingredients to the recyclable glass jars. If you want to show your skin some love and make it smell utterly delicious, than this is the range for you! There’s a detoxifying and soothing exfoliating facial mask, a silky butter cleanser and then my favourite, the soft moisturising cream that smells like a bucket of cookies and cream ice-cream. TO Penetrate and hydrate the skin, a glorious blend of organic shea butter, organic cocoa butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E and vanilla powder have been combined to help hydrate the skin and make it silky smooth.

For your hands: Feel Good Organics. This stuff is the whole package when it comes to treating your hands, especially in winter when they become dry and cracked a lot quicker than normal. Soak, scrub and moisturise with this handy little pack that is full of zesty mandarin scent. Feel Good Organics is inspired by our natural environment with a philosophy to create, formulate and sell products  that are honest, natural and beneficial to those who use them. With a commitment environmental wellbeing, this range certainly ticks all of the boxes. Want to try them for you self? Enter our comp down below and you could win one all for yourself!

I came across two other hand products that, after trialling each for about a week, i have found to work wonders on skin that is dry and rough. One is the Lush Helping Hands pot is think and creamy with a faint smell that your boyfriend probably won’t like, but your hands certainly will. Lush is known for its fight against animal testing, and all products are made with natural ingredients, like this one that is a nurturing blend of almond, cocoa butter and chamomile.

The other hand cream I’ve been carrying around in my handbag for a couple of weeks now is the La Mav Nourish Hand Cream that was kindly sent to us. I’d never heard of La Mav before but can confirm I’m glad it now takes pride of place in my handbag and on my desk at work. Made with sweet salmon oil, jojoba oil, macadamia oil, hyaluronic acid, natural vitamin E, shea butter and aloe vera leaf juice, this sweet little thing isn’t going anywhere. For Your Feet: While you’re showing the rest of your bod some love, don’t forget your feet! Premium Spa Australia does a great foot treatment that’s super quick, easy and inexpensive. Use the SOS Foot Scrub, made with lavendar, pumice and peppermint to cleanse, exfoliate and remove dry skin and then lather in the SOS Foot Balm to moisturise, soften and soothe. It’s the perfect solution before a night out in your new heels or pre-beach holiday, and it also works a treat at the end of the week when your feet are tired and sore. Premium Spa Australia is an Australian range of naturally based home-spa products that are filled with certified organics and natural extracts and oils. The range is designed to spoil your body and the earth, and all packaging is recyclable. If you’re looking for more of an everday foot treatment, check out the Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Creme with Vitamin E (my Mum loves it!).  P.S. foot treatments are all the more luxurious if you can get someone else to do it for you while you sit back and read your favourite magazine. That is the dream!

For A Faux Glow: There’s a whole lot of natural and organic beauty products that will get you a safe summer glow all year round. Carol’s Beauty has a number of sun tanning enhancers while ivadore has released a new product that is a tanning treatment, luxurious moisturiser and it has natural anti-ageing properties. You should also check out JBronze, Eco Tan and Tan Organic if you are looking for the perfect fake tan for you (and shout out if you know of any others to include too). Eco-Friendly Beauty Products For Your Body | Brisbane Threads

The All Rounders: You can’t have a good beauty product haul if you don’t have a couple of all rounders thrown in for good measure. Try the Burt’s Bees Fragrance Free Shea Butter and Vitamin E Body Lotion for general moisturising, or the Coconut Culture  Smooth & Soothe Skin Cream that is derived from organic virgin cold-pressed coconut oil. We can’t finish an all rounders wrap-up without mentioning the natural skincare brand Scentrelle and its beautiful Body Dew Moisturising Oil and GAIA’s certified organic Body Moisturisers that are free from propylene glycol, petrochemicals, silicone derivatives, lanolin and mineral oils.

For A Little LuxuryThe Premium Spa Australia range has some great products that will bring a little luxury to your everyday beauty routine without a large investment and long hours at the salon. Try the Salt Body Scrub in Lemon Butter for a dreamy, aromatic blend that leaves skin fresh, moisturised and smooth or the Rosehip and Shea Scrub with naturally exfoliating Australian sea salt, rosehip, shea butter and chamomile. Lather your body with them while in the bath and rinse, or sooth into your skin in a circular motion. The SOS Wonder Scrub, Sugar Body Scrub in Frangipani and Coconut and the Ultra Firming Body Balm also add a touch of luxury to the otherwise mundane task of exfoliating and moisturising.

So, now that your spoiled for choice when it comes to beauty products that are good for your body and the environment, there’s no more excuses. Where possible, opt for natural, eco-friendly and organic beauty products and avoid generic, supermarket bought brands that are filled with chemicals and harsh toxins.

Still want more? Next week we’ve got a huge post in the works on natural, eco-friendly and organic beauty products for your sweet cheeks, so be sure to stop by next Tuesday!
