Top 10 Venues for a Cheeky Sunday Session

posted by Teagan West December 3, 2014 0 comments

We all know the saying “A Sunday well spent brings a week of content.” So go forth and spend your Sunday wisely – we’ve got you sorted when it comes to a couple of cheeky Sunday bevs and a good feed with your best pals in tow.

Blackbird Bar and Grill

Riverside Centre, 123 Eagle Street, Brisbane

Blackbird Bar and Grill is possibly ‘the’ riverside hotspot every day of the week, Sunday included. The newly launched Sundays at Blackbird is complete with a beast on a spit that is carved into tasty sliders, boutique mix & match beer buckets, summertime cocktail jugs, a new bar menu with lots of casual dining options and a luxe afternoon vibe above the river.

Archive Beer boutique

100 Boundary Street, West End

For craft beer enthusiasts look no further than Archive Beer Boutique and its 22 rotating drought beers on tap and over 400 domestic and imported bottled beers. It’s the perfect place for an afternoon catch up over a couple of beers.

The Fox Hotel

71-73 Melbourne Street, South Brisbane

The Fox Hotel has had a facelift recently, making the shift from teenage party hub to a more chilled out atmosphere with a quality food and drinks menu. Soho Sundays on Dandy’s Rooftop is definitely a thing when a spicy chorizo, sweet corn and feta pizza and mango Weisbar inspired cocktail is on the menu.

Cobbler Bar

7 Browning Street, West End

Cobbler is a whisky and cocktail bar with a twist. Sure it has 300+ whiskeys from all over the world, but it’s the food menu, or lack of, that intrigues me most. Cobbler is BYO food! Yup, you heard correctly, you can take whatever food you wish to consume with you – a DIY cheese board, selection of desserts, takeaway from nearby restaurants… let your imagination run wild.

Alfred & Constance

Corner of Alfred and Constance Street, Fortitude Valley

Alfred & Constance is synonymous with quirky hipster, it’s colourful, fun and unpretentious. There’s three bars and so many areas to explore – the White Lightning Tiki Bar, The Vanguard Beer Garden Bar, The Alcoholic Juice & Smoothie Station, the underground Fever Club and a number of foodie hotspots to fill the gap between drinks. And you get lei’d on arrival.

The Normanby Hotel

1 Musgrave Road, Red Hill

It’s the place to be on the northside come Sunday afternoon, with flowing drinks, hearty food and many areas to mix and mingle until your heart is content.

Woolly Mammoth Alehouse

633 Ann Street, Fortitude Valley

Although Woolly Mammoth is the new kid on the Valley block, the contemporary beer hall has gained a large following with its rustic off-the-bone menu, large selection of craft beer, crowd-pleasing entertainment and indoor activities to the likes of Bocce, Giant Jenga and Shuffleboard. Enjoy a Mammoth Sunday. They also provide a little something extra for the craft beer lovers.

Dutch Courage Officers’ Mess

51 Alfred Street, Fortitude Valley

Dutch Courage Officers’ Mess is a gin bar with all of the trimmings. Inspired by the British colonial outposts of the late 19th century, Dutch Courage specialises in gin cocktails and has a well-planned selection of share plates and tapas on offer. For those basking in Brisbane’s gin scene – this is the place to be.

Riverbar & Kitchen

Riparian Plaza, Promenade Level
71 Eagle Street, Brisbane

Spectacular Story Bridge views, plenty of seating, a colourful menu and drinkies abound, Riverbar and Kitchen is as casual as it gets without compromising quality and atmosphere. Come at me jug of Passionfruit Sangria!

Soleil Pool Bar

Podium Level, Rydges, Corner of Grey and Gleneig Streets, South Bank

Poolside bars are the It-Girls of the Brisbane nightlife scene when it comes to hot days and sunset hangs. Although Soleil Pool Bar has only just opened, it’s set to become a Sunday go-to thanks to its luxe interior, tasty bar menu, summertime drinks list and inviting pool begging you to take a splash.

Riverbar & Kitchen review!

I am not typically a cocktail drinker. So when Riverbar & Kitchen invited me along to sample their tapas and cocktail menu, I really didn’t know what to expect. Not one to miss an opportunity, I got there and dove headfirst into a Marshmallow Colada! Sailor Jerry, toasted marshmallow, fresh lemon, pineapple juice, coconut …. what a drink! I don’t know if it was the Sailor Jerry talking, but suddenly the cares of the week faded away and I was relaxed, enjoying the fabulous view of the Brisbane River and soaking up the lively atmosphere.

Round two, I ordered a Crimson Blossom.  Belvedere citrus, raspberry, fresh lemon, grapefruit juice, passionfruit. Excuse me, I think someone drank my drink, I giggled as my stunned partner wondered how I guzzled it down so fast!

For dinner we enjoyed the Crispy Chicken Wings with chipotle ‘slaw; Salami pizza and Lamb Kofta. All a perfect size to share amongst friends and delicious to boot.

Round three, and I could no longer remember what cocktail I ordered… but it looked fancy and tasted great!

Riverbar & Kitchen is open from 7am – late 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch, dinner, after-work drinks and afternoon drinks on the weekend; and they officially have my vote for cocktails, tapas and an amazing view.

Why not take advantage of the location and book a table for Riverfire on Saturday 27 September? On the night they’ll have live music and there’ll be River Gin Fizz cocktail jugs for  ladies and buckets of four local bottled craft beers for the gents at just $25 each.

The clever folk over at Rekorderlig (you know the premium Swedish cider that all the cool kids are drinking!?) have a new flavour to accompany you through the change of season – Orange-Ginger Cider!

We got to try it and so, we played around and made cocktails with it right after we had a first taste-testing gulp. It’s delicious by the way – much better than the standard ginger beer! Here’s what we came up with… the possibilities are endless…

Beachside Bliss

Orange-ginger Rekorderlig, orange juice, vodka, lime to garnish.

cocktail1

Rekorderlig Sunrise

Layer pineapple juice and orange juice, top with orange-ginger Rekorderlig, tequila.

cocktail3

With Lime

Place limes in glass, pour orange-ginger Rekorderlig over. Perfecto!

cocktail4

Rekorderlig Punch

Apple juice, orange-ginger Rekorderlig, orange flavoured vodka, apple and orange to garnish.

cocktail5

Sweet Sensation

Cranberry cordial, orange-ginger Rekorderlig, vodka, lime to garnish.

cocktail7

Hot Tip: I also found a recipe online for a tasty winter combo.

Add a thumb of ginger, a dash of honey and a splash of lemon juice to your orange-ginger Rekorderlig and heat until warm. Serve with an orange wheel.

But who are we kidding – everyone knows Rekorderlig’s are MOST delicious when you pop the cap and drink it straight from the bottle! Enjoy.

P.S. do you have any Rekorderlig inspired cocktail mixes that you make? Let us know, we’d love to try them!

Beverages of Brisbane

Confession time…

My name is Carmel and I love to have a drink, whether it be Friday night with the ladies, a slow summer sunday on a shady veranda or just an evening tipple with good company I want to be there.

Since coming home from London I’m constantly impressed by all the new pretty places in Brisbane, you’ve really grown into your looks Brisbane.  My list of new favourite places is going to be VERY one sided on two counts, 1) it’s mostly city and southside locations and 2) there’s a lot of whisky.

I live on the south side and I love whisky, don’t worry though, I am committed to visiting everywhere in Brisbane, and I really like other beverages too – so if you’ve got some recommendations for my North Side adventures or varied suburban gems throw them at me here or on our Reader Challenge!

Mr & Mrs G

A cute little spot by the river that kinda looks like someone threw up a roof and windows added some furniture and called it a bar, Mr & Mrs G is both adorable and fun! Great for cocktails with the girls, it’s a bit on the money talks side with a delicious cocktail setting you back about $20.  The service was impeccable though and they have style and presentation down to an art.  My drink of the night – Triple Malt Fashioned, channel Mad Men and misbehave with this little glass of joy.

Malt

Dark, hidden and with prettiest display of whisky’s I’ve seen for awhile this place was heaven!  Super cute bartenders too *winkwink!  Great for a sexy date or just a nightcap, these guys will send you home happy.  My companions raved about the great wine and cocktail selection but for me, well I couldn’t go past the 18 year old Macallan.  The bartenders are also very skilled at picking your new favourite based on past tastes if you’d like to try something new.

Canvas

I love the Woolloongabba precinct, when I was little this place was all boarded up and miserable and now look at it! Beautiful.  Canvas is super cute with wonderful staff, great interior and the drinks menu makes me want to do a happy dance.  I loved my visit, although my company was pretty spectacular too.  The Liam Neeson had me Taken with it’s very specific skill set, skills it clearly acquired from a very long career, but it was no nightmare, it was a dream!

Archive

Wonderful hipster West End, a constant joy to my life, Archive’s been around for some time and is becoming an old favourite for me and mine.  Trivia nights, pool tables and comic book wallpaper has me set up for a special experience.  It’s all about the beer here, wrap your lips around one of the many specialties (I’m a lager girl), or get some whisky/beer love with a boilermaker! My favourite is Sunshine on the Glen.

Bosc

Another West End joint, this place only opened in August and I think we found it by chance.  Teeny tiny at 69 Vulture street this place was lots of fun, very kitsch with its range of board games and bench style tables.  Check out their awesome cocktail list, they come in big glasses and make you want to dance.  They’re specialty is Gin cocktails and they know how to put a drink together wind your way over and love it like I do.
