Beauty Tuesday – Top 12 Bathroom Essentials

posted by Teagan West July 7, 2015 4 Comments

Whether you have your own private ensuite (you lucky girl!) or you share with siblings, friends or your other half, bathrooms can be a chaotic and cluttered space instead of a relaxing sanctuary. If you are anything like me, your cupboards and drawers are overflowing with products and beauty tools, yet only a handful are faithfully relied on for my everyday beauty routine. But do you think I could part with the small army of products and tools that occupy the space in my bathroom – no way!

I’m a hoarder, so I can almost guarantee that there are products in my bathroom that are a number of years old. So I did what I should have been doing for years and did a big clean-out of my beauty haul, sorting everything into two piles – the essential items and the not-so-essential clutter.

To bring you this feature, I joined forces with RY.com.au, an online beauty store that sells everything you could possibly need when it comes to beauty products. They’ve got tools for your hair, serums for your skin and products that will highlight your gorgeous natural features, so stop by and have a look around. The best part about RY is that free shipping is available when you spend $99, they are based on the Gold Coast so your goodies will be delivered in no time, they only sell authentic brands and there’s a decent sale section (shop it here). They’ve also just acquired FacialCo.com.au too, so share the love over there too for all of your skincare and beauty needs.

Inspired by the RY range, I did a stocktake on my own bathroom (both the real and fantasy versions) and compiled my findings into this post – the ultimate guide to bathroom essentials. We’re talking about the real-girl stuff that makes your bathroom functional and chic. So go forth and give your bathroom the clean out and restock it deserves and give these 12 things pride of place!

GOOD SKINCARE PRODUCTS – Skincare products are often bought generically with a one-size-fits-all approach. However skincare products should be purchased on a case by case basis, and you really need to find one that does good for your skin, inside and out. RY stocks some great brands in its range including Skinstitut, Dermalogica, Coast to Coast, Asap and Alpha-H, so start by researching them and checking their ingredients list.

QUALITY MAKEUP – Good quality make up should be in every gals arsenal of go-to products on a daily basis. If you have a couple of good products, they’ll get you through every occasion with ease and you’ll find you don’t need the excessive stash that is hidden in drawers and beauty cases. Ditch all of the cheap, generic brands that don’t work and splash your cash on some good quality makeup products. All you’ll need is a good foundation, mascara, bronzer, blush, eyeliner and an everyday eyeshadow palette in natural hues. That’s it! They’ll last longer in the jar and on your face, and the ingredients are often more wholesome too.

MAKEUP REMOVERS – If you are prone to leaving your makeup on at night when you get home late, take note, because after I’m done with you, you’ll never do it again (I hope). Sleeping with your makeup on results in your pores and oil glands becoming clogged, dehydrated skin, the renewal process is prevented, skin ages considerably faster, eye irritations and infections can form, breakouts are more common and the skin cannot rejuvenate. What’s worse, is that when you leave your makeup on overnight then you are allowing your skin to marinate in all of the germs, oil and debris that has collected throughout the day. Horrified yet? You should be! If you do happen to have a big night and stumble into bed without your makeup wipes (gasp), the first thing you should do in the morning is wash, cleanse (twice) and apply a face mask to get the healing process started stat.

MOISTURISER – The first beauty tip I ever truly learned and took on board was to master the art of moisturising morning and night, especially in the winter months when your skin dries out more than usual. You’ll need a good hydrating moisturiser for your face (check out the Coastal Lightweight Moisture Lotion by Coast to Coast here) and another full body lotion that works well with your skin and is the perfect balance so that your skin is neither dry or oily. You may need to try a few before you find the perfect one, but I can guarantee that when you do, the experimenting will be well worth it and your skin will feel silky smooth morning and night. Tip: keep your moisturiser on the bench to remind you to use it as often as possible.

HAIR CARE PRODUCTS – Hair products, especially shampoo and conditioner, are often on high rotation and need to be replaced monthly because you use a large amount on a regular basis. Because it is something that you buy alot, we often reach for the cheapest brand or the supermarket special to save some cash, however it is not always the best solution for your hair and scalp. Invest in good quality products and you will find that you use less and the product itself is more effective. Ditch the slew of hair products that occupy the cupboard and instead have a good shampoo, conditioner, dry scalp treatment, heat protecting serum and one or two styling products to help your hair hold it’s shape. The Moroccanoil range has a good selection of hair products if you don’t know where to start.

EXFOLIATING MITS – Exfoliating is perhaps just as important as moisturising, however we often forget about it in our rush out the door or to bed.  Make it super easy by having an exfoliating mit or sponge in the shower so you have no excuses. You can use an exfoliating scrub a couple of times a week, or just use your normal body wash and an exfoliating mit and rub lightly in a circular motion on your arms and legs.  For your face, opt for a specialised face exfoliating scrub that is gentle on sensitive areas. Tip: always exfoliate before using tanning products as it will make the tan last longer and appear more natural.

TANNING – Speaking of tanning, get a healthy glow from the bottle and protect your skin from the harsh Queensland sun when you are outdoors. Always keep your tanning products in the bathroom (fake tan and carpets definitely do not match), because you never know when an impromptu miniskirt occasion will be pop up, so always be prepared. I personally love the JBronze range and I’ve also heard good things about the St Tropez Luke Dry Oil.

HAIR STRAIGHTENER – The beloved hair straightener – a girls best friend for life from the ripe age of 14. After a couple of misadventures when the straightening iron met with my wild, curly teenage hair, I know a thing of two about hair straighteners. Just recently I upgraded to the rose gold special edition GHD straightener (pictured below and available here) and it is the best dang beauty product I ever did buy (and the most expensive too might I add). It’s lightweight and easy to pack up for a night away, looks gorgeous sitting on my bathroom bench top, heats up within 30 seconds and it does a brilliant job on my hair. We’re officially BFF’s. Tip: Did you know you can also use your hair straightener to iron your clothes when you don’t have an iron on hand? See this post for all the deets.

RANGE OF BRUSHES – I’m still not into the beauty brushes thing (yet), but any beauty editor or makeup artist will tell you that brushes make the difference between a good makeup look, and a great one. Next time it comes to replacing your brush set, opt for quality over quantity and just get the shapes you use most often to start with and slowly build your collection. If you’ve invested in good brushes, make sure you also have a brush cleaning serum on hand and use it every two weeks to clean them (trust me, you don’t want to know what’s on the end of those things).

NAIL POLISH REMOVER – It’s one of those things that you always need, but never seem to have on hand when your nail colour is chipped and looking worn. For a quick and easy touch up, wipe clean with nail polish remover and start again with a fresh slick of paint. It also doesn’t hurt to have a couple of different nail polish colours  on rotation too.

COZY TOWELS – I love beauty products and am thrilled to have narrowed down my top 10 bathroom collection so that I only have the uncluttered, everyday products and tools in my lady room. So now, to my other favourite thing – homewares! I drew a little inspiration from the beautiful bathrooms of Pinterest and have decided every stylish and functional bathroom must have a gorgeous set of cozy towels and a plush bath mat. Soft black ones complement a white tiled bathroom if you’re style is minimalist, and if you prefer a splash of colour, a chic set in pastels or clashing prints will do the trick.

DIRTY CLOTHES BASKET – Finally, as old fashioned as it sounds, you need a dirty clothes basket. Say goodbye to the mountain of discarded clothes and towels that occupy the bathroom corner and find a dirty clothes basket that looks like a feature rather than a home for worn clothes. And while we’re on the topic – when it is full, actually do your washing woman!

So that’s it – 12 bathroom essentials you must have on hand around the clock to keep your skin silky smooth, your makeup flawless and your lady space looking chic and tidy. Now it’s over to you – what’s your tips, tricks and handy hints when it comes to bathroom essentials? We’d love to hear them in the comments below.

Are you ready to follow your passion?

posted by Danielle Lewis May 1, 2015 0 comments

Every day I wake up I feel excited and lucky to work in an industry that I love, surrounded by awesome passionate people. And any chance I get to help someone else find their path to feeling the same way in their profession, I snap up! That’s why I was SO EXCITED when I heard about the College of Natural Beauty’s Open Day next weekend.

The College of Natural Beauty is internationally recognised for its comprehensive beauty training, teaching staff and well equipped facilities, which means we have world-class resources at our finger tips, right here in Brisbane!

Established in 1992, it has become a leading beauty therapy training institution and is a valuable resource for the industry looking to employ professional and highly skilled therapists.

So graduating from the College of Natural Beauty looks pretty amazing on your resume when you are ready to find your first job.

Heddy Macaulay – Director of Aesthetics Education says – “We’ve reinterpreted the meaning of natural to represent a connection between personal wellness, economic longevity and the health of our environment. It’s about teaching students the importance of sustainability in every sense and incorporating it into theory and practice.”

But don’t take their word for it, college graduate Melissa states, “I chose the College of Natural Beauty because of their professionalism and facilities. However, what I gained from the college was so much more. I became part of a close family of great people with the same passion. I received continuous support from my teachers and admin staff and made so many close friends. Now, I am graduating into my dream job. The College has given me the skills and confidence I needed to achieve my goals, and I am so happy I chose to study at the College of Natural Beauty.”

If  you have been considering a career in beauty therapy you simply can’t miss the Open Day  on Saturday 9 May.

When: Saturday May 9  from 10am to 12.30pm

Where: 269 Wickham street, Fortitude valley

Beauty Products You Need For Autumn

posted by Teagan West March 12, 2015 3 Comments

Can you believe that it’s the middle of March already! And even more shocking, it’s Autumn (apparently good ol’ Brisbane didn’t get the memo)!!

The new season brings with it many changes (hello ankle boots, hot tea and comfort food) to our routine, beauty being one of them. Because after all, when the weather changes, so does our skin and hair.

Whether it is because of the excessive exposure to Vitamin D, salty air and balmy nights or because ‘beach chic’ becomes a legitimate style from December through February (meaning you can totally not wash your hair for 3 nights in a row), summer seems to do wonders to our body. Whatever the scientific reason for this is, it’s safe to say everything changes in Autumn, and then again in Winter, so there’s no better time to pucker up, lather up and nourish your body from head to toe.

But how, I hear you ask?!

With these beauty prodz!

The Body Shop Vitamin E Hand & Nail Treatment – because dry, cracked skin is never a good look. This nail and hand treatment is an antioxidant protection for soft hands and stronger nails, is suitable for all skin types and is the perfect size to fit in your handbag for regular use.

Kester Black Water Based Nail polish Remover and ‘Prenup’ Nail Polish – because the nail polish remover is peach scented, pastels are perfect for the transeasonal months and Kester Black is proud to be completely ethically produced.

Benefit ‘They’re Real’ Mascara – because a good mascara is a year-round must. This little gem is one of the best mascara’s I’ve used over the years and I’m in no way ready to try something new.

Schwarzkopf Professional OSIS+ Refresh Dust – because dry shampoo is perhaps the best invention ever, at least where the beauty industry is concerned. This new Schwarzkopf product will do wonders for day-old hair that needs a little freshen up.

Lush Solid Shampoo Bars – because they’re economical, naked and self-preserving. Also because over here at Brisbane Threads we love all things Lush, and these solid shampoo bars are most definitely included. And the best part – these bad boys can get you through 80 washes, so even if you wash your hair daily, this will (almost) last you until Winter!

Laqa & Co. Fat Lip Pencil in Jimmy Bastard – because a bold (but not OTT) lip is the perfect autumn look when keeping the eye makeup simple. This watermelon shade works for every occasion, from weekend coffee, boardroom meetings, family dinners and a romantic date night. Perfecto!

Go-To Lips! Super Balm – because it actually is a super blam! Beauty guru Zoe Foster Blake is a god dam legend, and Lips! is the proof. It smells so good you could eat it (but probably shouldn’t) and you can feel it healing chapped lips within seconds, so it’s essentially a hero.

JBronze Medium Tanning Mousse – because everyone loves a little bit of streak-free, natural-looking colour on their legs. Autumn is a funny time of year where you’re still in your summer threads (at least in good ol’ Queensland) but you just don’t have that summer glow to your skin any more. Fake tan to the rescue! I jumped on the JBronze (tanning products created by former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins) bandwagon early and have never looked back.

So tell us, what’s your Autumn beauty must-haves? We’d love to hear them, and you know, share some tricks of the trade.

Brisbane Beauty – Issada Cosmetics

posted by Abby Page February 12, 2015 0 comments

The Issada VIP night on Tuesday, February 3 was a must-go event for a makeup addict like me! A victim of brands like MAC, Naopleon Perdis, and Nars already, this exclusive shopping night (with discounts and free gifts – yes please!) gave me the opportunity to add Issada to that collection.

For those not familiar with the Issada story, the brand originally started as a luxury makeup brush company in Brisbane, and was the brush of choice by makeup artists on Hollywood film sets. Brisbane beauty therapist Fiona Neale bought the company in 2006, and launched Issada’s much-requested makeup range soon after.

Issada has now become popular makeup brand in Australia, with two concept stores here in Brisbane – Oxford St, Bulimba and Edward St, Brisbane City, where the invite-only event took place.

I was served by the wonderful Holly, who did a skin patch test on my skin to determine my shade of foundation (both cream and powder). She took me around the whole store, showing me each product and explaining the wonder that is Issada.

Completely alcohol and paraben free, the makeup is made from clinical grade minerals and vitamins, and has all sorts of natural goodness in it like jojoba oil and green tea extract. But what’s the best part? The makeup is vegan friendly and not tested on animals.

I left Issada with a bag full of goodies and feeling like I had been given the VIP treatment. If you love natural and animal friendly makeup, give this local brand a try – you won’t be disappointed!

NYE Style with the Repeat Offender

posted by Teagan West December 27, 2014 2 Comments

New Year’s Eve is just around the corner and we all know that New Year’s Eve must start with the perfect outfit!

So whether you’re gearing up for a girls’ night out, a laidback house party or something in between, it’s important to consider the location and the dress code to start the new year with a bang.

Personal Stylist and Founder of Repeat Offender, Elisha Casagrande takes us through her top tips on how to style the perfect outfit to put an end to the dreaded what-to-wear dilemma on the biggest party night of the year!

Pool Party

Once you’ve jumped out of the pool, switch to a lace bra to keep your outfit looking feminine.  Wear a classic button up shirt as a cover up or pair it with some shorts to slip in and out of as your jumping in and out of the pool!

White Party
Texture keeps an all-white outfit exciting and a hint of skin through the crochet is sexy but flattering! Look for unique design details like a textured hemline to elevate a white on white look.

House Party
Comfort is key for a New Year’s Eve house party. Take a casual yet edgy approach to ensure you’re in for the long haul. Wedge sneakers are the ultimate comfort for a night on your feet but also give you that extra height to create a more flattering shape for the legs and bottom.

Change up the look once the dancing starts by taking off the jeans for a cute mini!

Nightclub/ Bar Party
When wearing neutrals, add an accent shade like a metallic gold to create a more polished look.  A statement necklace with a sweet-heart neckline draw attention toward the upper body & face, away from common problem areas below the waist.

When wearing a shorter style, look for vertical design details such as zips or panels on the bustier to lengthen the body and create a slimming effect.

Dinner Party
A denim jacket adds a casual but chic element to a formal occasion. Add some rose gold, an understated shade that works perfectly with every skin-tone.

When choosing accessories, match them to a colour in the print to keep your look polished.

How To Get A Flawless Fake Tan

posted by Chloe Clark December 17, 2014 0 comments

loving tan

When it comes to self tanning – especially if you are tanning for a special occasion- you want to make sure you nail it. Fake tan often gets a pretty bad rap, although this is usually because it is not being applied and maintained correctly.

Last week Beginning Boutique hosted ‘How To Get The Perfect Tan’, an event for Brisbane customers to get together and learn how to achieve the perfect summer glow! Loving Tan shared tips and tricks on how to be beautifully bronzed this summer, from preparing your skin to applying the product and prolonging your tan.

fake tan DIY

So here you have it, five steps to achieving the perfect at-home summer tan:

1. Exfoliate your entire body in the shower and if you are going to shave or wax make sure you do it 24 hours prior to tanning! Right before you apply your tan, moisturize your hands, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, feet and any dry skin that the tan will cling to.

2. Choose the right tan for your skin type! Loving Tan has a range of mousses that are easy to apply and dry super fast. If you are a rookie then Medium is the way to go so you can get an idea of how your skin takes to the tan. It is also more forgiving if you accidentally miss a patch or pack a little too much on your hands. Dark is great if you have some experience in self tanning and Ultra Dark is the holy grain product for tan-o-rexics! Medium and Dark both come in 2 hour Express Mousses if you need to look great, quickly!

3. Apply a generous amount and work in small sections. First work in circular motions and then pat dry for a flawless finish. Starting from your legs and working your way up is a good idea so you can do your hands last. For perfect hands and feet, only use excess product on the mitt to lightly blend the product, making sure to not miss in between your fingers. The tan has an instant bronzer so you can see where the product has been applied. You don’t need to stress if the bronzer looks streaky, as this will wash off when you shower and you will be left with a flawless tan.

4. To prolong the life of your tan moisturise daily with an unscented moisturizer. Avoid shaving until you are ready to remove or reapply the tan.

5. Use an exfoliating glove to remove tan and make sure there are no patches of old tan left on the skin before reapplying!

Follow all of these steps and you will be sure to have a perfect summer glow!

Beginning Boutique stocks all Loving Tan products and offers free express shipping Australia wide and free same day shipping in Brisbane!

Get Christmas Beautiful – 5 Home Remedies That REALLY Work

posted by Tanya Morrissey December 16, 2014 1 Comment

Everyone rushes to the beauty Salon to get ready for Christmas but this year I suggest a trip to your kitchen! I have put together some of my top tips for looking beautiful this festive season at little to no cost.

Get your Christmas glow on

Avocado face mask

Mix ½ avocado, ½ cup of plain yogurt and ¼ cup of honey until completely blended. Apply this all over the face and leave for ten Minutes. When you rinse your skin will have a beautiful dewy look.

Whiten those teeth for Santa

Baking soda saviour – No one likes to look back at Christmas photos and cringe at their yellow teeth. This one really works so start straight away.

Brush your teeth as normal and when you’re finished – dip your toothbrush into some baking soda and scrub your teeth a second time. Not the most amazing taste in the world but it works a treat.

Shrink that dreaded Christmas Pimple

Peppermint popper – We all drink and indulge way too much at Christmas and one of the side effects can be a not-so lovely visitor right in the centre of your nose. Use this handy trip to shrink him.

Mix a small handful of Peppermint in a food processor with 1 tsp lemon juice. Cover the blemish for 15 minutes, then rinse. Repeat twice a day until the spot is gone. Magic !!

Yellow nails be gone!

Ginger ale –not just for whiskey. We all go overboard on the nail varnish during the year and as a result can be left with scary yellow nails. Fill a glass full of Ginger ale and dip your naked nails in. In no time that yellow tinge will be a thing of the past.

Give yourself a DIY facelift

Tanaka face massage- Ten minute game changer

We exercise our bodies but forget that our face needs exercising too. If you want to tighten and lift your whole face this year add this Tanaka facial massage to your daily routine- the results will amaze you.

Summer Beauty Tips for all you Hairy Apes

posted by Alice Duffield November 16, 2014 0 comments

Summer is well and truly here in Brisbane and it’s time to get rid of those scales, ape legs and winter feet. Here are my tips for getting ready for summer with simple beautifying techniques and products. I’m the absolute laziest beauty expert. I like to keep it simple and as natural as possible, so this my fuss-free approach to stripping off those summer layers without utter embarrassment.

De-hairify, You Ape!

I’d take a trip to Brazillian Beauty to start the season. These guys are your absolute best bet for waxing in Brisbane – they specialise in hair removal. I’m fair skinned and dark haired, so people who know hair (and hair removal) are who I need to be with. I also bought a hard core exfoliating mit and it’s the best I’ve come across. It’s perfect if you have issues with hairs not coming up properly or deep in-growns. It’s a little over $16 and worth every penny. Try this refreshing anti-bac too if you have issues with in-growns. My most recent visit was at the new salon at Spring Hill. Despite the fact that they were tearing hairs out of my body, I left feeling pampered and refreshed. It’s worth the trip!upclose exfoliator brazillian beauty

Get Those Tootsies Polished

Every week or two I sit my feet in warm water in epsom salts for about 20 minutes. I do this partly for health and partly for beauty. It’s a great way to give your feet a deep cleanse. Dry your feet thoroughly and then give them a good buff. Follow with this Lush foot mask. It. is. the. best. Polish your toesies with Kester Black. Ugh, this stuff is amazing. It has a great wide brush for flawless application and stays on for ages. It’s 5 free too, and vegan – so a guilt free polish!

Keeping Fresh and Clean

Natural Instinct Energising Body Wash – WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!! Seriously, this stuff is so good. Now that the weather is {too} warm, I’ve switched up my body wash. In winter I need a deep moisturising one of I get that CRAZY itch that goes all up my back with any and every movement – you know the one, right? But in summer I need something a little lighter with a little more ZING! Well, this body wash is my new summer shower addiction. The smell of it seriously gets me feeling happy. Get on board with this one, my friends.

Summer Protection

I’m a big fan of getting vitamin D the natural way. Unless I am going for a hike or somewhere that I’ll be in the harsh sun for hours on end, I try not to wear sunscreen. In saying that, I do always like to have a nice clean sunscreen on hand for our harsh B-town sun! This Natural Instinct one doesn’t make me feel like I’m gently rubbing chemicals into my body. I can get on board with that.

Lips be Lush-ious and Red

Nothing is more vibrant and summery than a bright red lip. This lip tint from Lush is my new boyfriend and the cheapest boyfriend yet at under $10! If it’s just for casual wear to dress up jeans and a tee, I wear it plain. If I’m heading out somewhere a little more respectable, slap on some Go-To Lips! on top for some shine. This stuff is the shiz.

Well there you have it. Turn yourself back into a human being this summer. Pop those shorts on and put your shiny new legs and feet in front of everyone you see. Stay cool friends.
