Beauty Tuesday | Brisbane Threads

Hello Beauties! This week for Beauty Tuesday we joined forces with one of our favourite skincare brands to bring you all of the info you need to keep your skin clear and fresh this holiday season. So, we asked Zoe Devine, Skinstitut Holistic Skin and Wellness Expert, about her skincare routine, how to treat hungover skin, what foods are best for your skin and more, and she spilt the beans on absolutely everything! She’s an expert in her field, and these tips and tricks are unrivalled (as is the Skinstitut brand, we love!). Let’s get straight to the good stuff:

BT: Hi Zoe, thanks for taking the time to speak to Brisbane Threads for Beauty Tuesday! Let’s quick things off – what is your role with Skinstitut?

ZD: I am Skinstitut’s Holistic Skin and Wellness Expert.

BT: Can you tell us a little more about the Skinstitut range?

ZD: We are an Australian owned and made cosmedical skincare brand. We were founded in Australia over 7 years ago, to fill a gap in the market for a highly effective cosmedical skincare range. We believe that good skincare should be simple, affordable and effective! To pay hundreds of dollars for a skincare cream Is ludicrous and for this reason our products are priced 50% less than other comparable brands. Cosmedicals are the newest and arguably the most effective category of skin care products that can be purchased without a prescription and are often described as the last step before a doctor’s prescription. All our products are formulated with highly effective, scientifically proven active ingredients are free from parabins and not tested on animals!

Beauty Tuesday: Party Season Skincare Tips | Brisbane ThreadsBT: What products from the range can’t you live without, and why?

ZD: Such a difficult question! I love and use it all! One of the most important elements of a great home-care regime is to ensure you have all your bases covered. Skinstitut’s results-driven regimes encompass 5 steps: Cleanse, Exfoliate, Correct, Hydrate & Protect. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not in the bathroom morning and night applying layer after layer, I simply make sure somewhere in my regime all these areas are covered, in the morning I usually do 3 things: Cleanse, Hydrate and Protect; and at night I usually do 3 or 4 things: Cleanse, Exfoliate (a few times per week), Correct & Hydrate.

My personal favourite top 5 for my skin are: Cleanse: L-Lactic Cleanser – it hydrates and gently exfoliates, making my skin super soft and nourished, plus it really brightens my complexion. I use this twice every day to help control any congestion too. Exfoliate: Enzymatic Micro Peel – this is my favourite exfoliating mask that I use 2 – 3 times per week, I love that I can use it over my lips and around my eye area, as it is super gentle. Since I have been using it for a while, the biggest change I noticed was all the fine lines around my eyes diminishing, as it helped to get rid of tiny little dead skin cells that had settled in the lines around my eyes. Correct: My current favourite has to be the Multi-Active Oil, I cannot believe the difference it made to my skin within such as short amount of time. It helps to really strengthen my skin and reduce reactivity. Being a slightly combination to oily skin type, it doesn’t make my skin oilier, in fact, the nights I use it I always wake up less oily in the morning with a more even and refined skin texture. Hydrate: Moisture Defence Normal Skin – such a fantastic light-weight hydrating product that is perfect for my skin combination. It increases the moisture content in my skin without clogging and sits perfectly under my Age Defence SPF 50+. And finally, Protect: Age Defence SPF 50+ – such a vital step in my daily regime. I love that it not only is the Age Defence protecting from premature ageing and sun damage, it’s also super hydrating and makes for a great makeup primer.Beauty Tuesday: Party Season Skincare Tips | Brisbane ThreadsBT: The party season is well and truly here – do you have any tips to prevent and cure hungover skin?

1. Always clean makeup off before going to bed! This is essential, especially after a big event in order to remove all traces of dirt, excess oil and skin debris, makeup and sunscreen. This will ensure the skin can function optimally whilst you sleep and the night time products you use can work effectively. The perfect go to for this is Skinstitut Gentle Cleanser, it is gentle enough to use in the eye area, so easy to foam up and lather over the entire face and in 30 seconds all traces of foundation and eye makeup can be quickly and easily removed.

2. The skin, like any other organ of the body is reliant of a constant supply of vitamins and minerals to keep it healthy. In times of stress, poor diet and excessive alcohol consumption, the skin is often the last organ to receive the necessary nutrients that make it look healthy and radiant. If you wake up the next morning after a fantastic event, but don’t look so fantastic yourself, apply a concentrated serum full of skin nutrients such as anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals to keep the skin healthy. Try Skinstitut Rejuvenate 15 Serum to hydrate, repair and renew skin.

3. Bump up the Vitamin C because it is needed for healthy collagen production and is even used in the body to aid with detoxification of alcohol. Unfortunately, a high alcohol intake can wipe out water soluble nutrients, like Vitamin C. Vitamin C deficiency shows in the skin through redness, dilated capillaries, premature ageing and pigmentation issues. So for a radiant, dewy skin tone, add a rice grain sized amount of Skinstitut Vitamin C 100% to your moisturiser each day (especially the day after an event).

BT: What foods and drinks work wonders for your skin?

– Water! No surprises here, overall hydration in general is crucial for the skin, so ensure you get your 2 litres (or 8 glasses) every day.

– Herbal tea because it’s caffeine free and won’t have a dehydrating effect on the body and the added bonus is that some herbs contain additional nutrients and antioxidants for the skin.

– Foods rich in essential fatty acids such as avocados, salmon, tuna, walnuts, flaxseeds and chia seeds.

– Vitamin A rich foods such sweet potato, mangoes and carrots.

– Leafy greens, because they are nutrient powerhouses to fuel the entire body, loaded with vitamins and nutrients. It’s easy to get your daily intake of veggies by adding in a few handfuls of leafy greens, such as spinach, rocket and kale, to every dish.

– Berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate.

– High fibre foods, because they’re like toxin terminators! Think vegetables, fruits, whole grains and seeds.Beauty Tuesday: Party Season Skincare Tips | Brisbane ThreadsBT: What are your top tips for glowing summer skin?

ZD: Hydrate – With plenty of good quality H2O. Interestingly, skin lacking superficial hydration leads to an impaired barrier function leaving skin, dehydrated, devitalised and prone to sensitivity. For an extra hydration boost, add a few drops of Multi-Active Oil to your moisturiser to keep your complexion ultra-supple and looking fresh. Exfoliate – The quickest way to look radiant is to remove dull, devitalised skin cells. If you have an important functoin coming up, take 1 pea size amount of Glycolic Scrub mix with warm water and gently massage over the face. Concentrate on the forehead, nose and chin as these tend to be thicker areas of skin. For oily or acne prone skin, leave the scrub on for up to 90 seconds for an intense exfoliation. Rinse with warm water and get ready to glow. Incorporate your ‘beauty’ foods for a naturally luminous complexion (berries, leafy greens, oily fish, nuts, seeds and whole grains especially). Eliminate toxins with a high fibre diet. Not only does fibre keep us regular, but it also helps to prevent damaging toxins from building up in our digestive system (especially when we may be overindulging throughout the party season). If these toxins aren’t eliminated out of the body with fibre they can come out through our skin and cause unwanted breakouts. Reduce caffeine intake, moderate alcohol intake and avoid energy drinks. Energy drinks may give you an instant energy hit but they are loaded with sugar and way too much caffeine (which is dehydrating for your skin and your whole body), remember you want to be glowing not buzzing!

BT: What is your favourite beauty trend of the season ahead?

ZD: Going bare with minimal makeup and opting for a fresh, more natural look. As they say, the best makeup is a great skincare regime! I love a more natural look as the weather warms up, especially keeping heavy foundations to a minimum and opting for light-weight mineral powders and letting your skin’s natural radiance shine through.

BT: Do you have any other tips to keep your skin looking clear and fresh?

ZD: Mixing and matching skincare products can lead to adverse skin reactions due to product overload or certain skincare ingredients being incompatible. Follow a simple skincare routine religiously for 4 – 6 weeks and you’ll be amazed at what a difference a little bit of commitment can make. Skincare products take time to really start working, and results can take anything from 4 to 6 weeks. Good things come to those who are patient!Beauty Tuesday: Party Season Skincare Tips | Brisbane ThreadsSo there you have it – everything you need to know about caring for your skin and adjusting your skincare routine this party season. After all, we’re all guilty of having one too many wines at the work Christmas party and waking up with a terrible hangover inside and out.
