Packing Light For A Weekend Away

Tips For Packing Light | Brisbane Threads

If you’re prone to an impromptu weekend away or find yourself flying interstate often for work or pleasure, you will know the perils of packing light, and (gasp) packing with carry-on luggage only.

I admire the travel bloggers who can pack for a week on the road (and in the air) with just a cabin sized suitcase or luggage bag, and always wondered if I could do the same. Then, the Easter long weekend rolled around and I faced the ultimate dilemma… how do I pack for a 4-day trip to Port Stephens (just outside of Newcastle in NSW) with just 7kgs. Let’s just say I’m not one known for packing lightly but I survived (first world problems, I know), so I wanted to share my tips with you all. Even though we love our sunshine state, there’s no harm in exploring beyond Brisbane for a weekend getaway.

5 Tips For Packing Light For a Weekend Away

1. Invest in a good-quality, durable and lightweight suitcase. I’m loving my Antler Juno hard shell cabin suitcase from Luggage Direct (suitcase available here). It’s super lightweight, weighing in at just 2.4kg with a capacity of 40L. It’s super spacious, has a compartment for clothes on one side, and more than enough room for toiletries, shoes and even a hat on the other. The best part? This suitcase is currently on sale ($229 down to $134) at the moment, so I definitely recommend investing to make packing for your weekend away quick and easy no matter your destination. Tips For Packing Light | Brisbane Threads2. For a weekend away, don’t succumb to packing 12 outfits and “just in case” pieces. Pack smart and versatile with pieces that can be mixed and matched together and paired with statement accessories or a change of shoes to take you from day to night. Denim, natural hues and stripes never go astray in a weekend getaway wardrobe, and a cute pair of slides can be dressed up and down depending on your activity.

3. If you are flying, wear your heaviest items on the plane. My standard flying outfit is jeans, sneakers and a T-shirt, and sometimes even scarf and/or jumper because I always feel the chill when in the air. Wear your heaviest items on the plane so they don’t take up space and weight in your luggage so you can fit more cute tops and sandals in.

This is only important if you are flying because you will no doubt have a weight limit that you must stick to, especially if you are travelling with only one piece of carry-on luggage. You can usually bring a small carry-on bag and one personal item (handbag or laptop bag) so keep your laptop separate and pop your books, magazines and charger in the bag to keep weight out of your other carry on.Enlist your BF or man-friend to carry one of your items as his own, because he only needs about 4 things, right?!

Enlist your BF or man-friend to carry one of your items as his own on a flight, or throw some things into his bag before you jump in the car. While you might actually need 5 sets of clothes, a bikini and beach hat, heels and flats, a makeup bag and straightening/curling iron, he certainly doesn’t!

What is your best packing tip for a weekend getaway? Whether you are flying or jumping in the car for a road trip, how do you ensure you pack light for a weekend away?
