Every year it’s the same story… All of a sudden Santa’s coming, then its the new year, oh, uni’s back…but it’s okay because Easter’s here but then Mother’s Day comes around the quickest of all and you’re suddenly left finding a last minute gift that totally doesn’t feel like a last minute gift. We really do love ya Mum!
Here at BT, we are all spoiled with 10/10 Mum’s and have decided they deserve nothing less than to be spoilt rotten. ‘Life’ gets in the way and there is simply not enough time in the day to think and do everything you wanted. But don’t worry, help is here, BT presents: The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Guide: 2016 edition.
Now, this may be an Ultimate Guide, and that it is, but, I believe one of the main issues with most landmark occasions is that it might be okay to “just get mum some flowers,” but no!!! Everyone is different so don’t spoil Mum with something she won’t like (and even worse, something that is so cliche) – so sit back and sift through the Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift Guide and get shopping stat. PS. Mother’s Day is Sunday May 8th if you’re totally clueless!
If you’ve got them a candle every year because they like them, that is fine but its time to think outside of the box. In the inspirational words of Cameron Diaz from Charles Angels, “I love tickets” – and that we do. Brisbane has been expanding and now has quite a theatre culture. Sometimes events, entertainment, shows and acts are forgotten as far as presents go and often they are the most memorable presents. So, maybe one of these will make Mums day?
- QPAC – The works: Comedy shows, Opera, Theatre, Dance, Music/ Musical Theatre
- Brisbane Entertainment Centre – The works: Comedy shows, Music Genious’, sporting events
- Queensland Theatre Company
- Brisbane Arts Theatre
- La Boite Theatre Company
- New Farm Cinemas – with a gourmet menu, fully licenced bar and 6 comfortably exclusive cinemas
Kookaburra ShowBoat Cruises are holding 4 (not 1, but 4!) dining cruises for you and your mum (and whoever else your heart desires)! There is a Mothers Day Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and High Tea Cruise around our River City all under $80 per person. This opportunity is once a year… if you get in and if your Mum is a bit of a boatie at heart, why not treat her to something different and knock her socks off.
If your Mum is a jewellery fanatic and has an overflowing supply, either steer clear from this category or go wild and stick to what you know she loves. It is hard, I know. But be creative, try vintage jewellery (Wolloongaba Antique Centre), get something nice made (melt some of your old silver or gold and make something from the heart, ladies and gents), hit up the good ol’ Molten Store that has become oh so popular but oh so good or on your day off have a look around some boutique hubs (James St Fortitude Valley, Latrobe Tce Paddington or Wooloongaba).
CLOTHES // FASHION DARLING:
If it’s clothes, clothes and more clothes that is fine – maybe one day she will pass them down to you, so there is hope for a return on your investment. You guys hopefully know your Mum’s style, but maybe get her something in the clothing department that she doesn’t have much of. Go to one of the big department stores and search for the perfect kit to compliment her winter wardrobe. Go basics; scarfs, ponchos, stylish hats, wraps, winter boots, cute socks, jeans – think what she might need more of, or perhaps something that she doesn’t know she needs!
If your Mum is all about the homewares there are a number of new stores around Brisbane that will tickle her fancy. The American owned Pottery Barn, Cultivate Design Co and Room for Living are just a few to start your shop at, as well as local favourite Bed, Bath N’ Table. Homewares are THE thing for every Mum (even your Mother-in-law!), so whether it’s a candle, marble scheeseboard, matching pillows, cute decor
Sometimes there is nothing better than getting her the perfect new saucepan, fresh apron, wooden chopping board, marble cheese platter, cookbook, towel, lamp, rug or cute ornaments. She will use it every day without fail.
If your Mum rocks some fab activewear, there is alway room for more in her active wardrobe. Whether she wears activewear for a trip to the movies, a coffee date with a girlfriend, running errands, cleaning the house or a trip to her local yoga studio, you can cover all bases with a pair of tights, a cute tee or a funky new pair of runners. Shop some of our favourite brands: Lululemon, Lorna Jane, Nike, Reebok, Yogasmoga, Bonds, ASOS, Rebel Sport.
Alright, so you’re reading this section because that lady is Nigella Lawson? Or because you want her to be? Either way – get her a cookbook, one can never have enough. If she’s already a wiz in the kitchen, cooking utensils, gadgets and trinkets that belong in her happy haven are the perfect Mother’s Day gift. There is however, a fine line, so don’t get her something that will only benefit your tummy, make sure its also something she would want and use. Get creative with this process, just like she does in the kitchen. You could make a hamper or if you are seriously unsure, take her to a cooking class….a gourmet cooking class! The James Street Cooking Classes is definitely a good place to start.
PAMPER IT UP:
If you are a little doubtful with buying her clothes or shoes maybe you need to look in the skin care department; products, body lotions and bath goods so she can pamper herself at home (hello, LUSH!). Or if she does this anyway, or always complains that she doesn’t have time for a luxurious bath (she’s a busy woman you know) maybe get her a pamper pack at your local beautician or beauty salon. If makeup is more her thing, this does not mean she will be stopping her collection anytime soon. You gals know what to do, it’s not just the foundation, it’s the contouring, the skincare regime, the moisturiser and all. If you’re in a rush Mecca is always a go-to for us, or if you have time, shop online at Lulu & Lipstick.
Don’t skip over this one because it doesn’t have to cost the earth. It could be as simple as a day trip to the Gold Coast (in which case check out this post) or stay overnight in a nice hotel in Brisbane, such as NEXT Hotel, TRYP, the Brisbane Marriott, the Treasury Casino or the Emporium Hotel. If she doesn’t mind a nice drive, head down to Byron Bay (visit The Farm Byron Bay for a meal), north to Noosa or visit the local wineries (we can recommend Dusty Hill Winery and Sirromet Winery at Mt Cotton). Any of these drives are a lovely surprise to do on Mother’s Day, or to plan for an upcoming weekend.
