In the name of ‘foodies’ everywhere, I hopped on down to Melbourne last month and faced the freezing cold temperatures in the name of delicious Melbourne food (and shopping!). With my trusty and fellow food lover beside me we sought out Melbourne’s uncelebrated food and drink treasures and have our top 3 picks for you to try the next time you’re, you know, in the area! (or better yet, they could come to BrisVegas… hint hint).
Café 51 is South Melbourne’s hole in the wall burger joint, literally. With burgers starting from just $2, it was this uni students dream come true! Sticking to my guns I ordered their bacon cheeseburger while my fellow foodie ordered the mother of all burgers – The Mac Daddy. While my classic was every burger lover’s dreams come true, The Mac Daddy was everything and then some! Packed between two buns is mac and cheese, ‘dirty cheese’, beef patty, potato cake, slow cooked beef brisket, more ‘dirty cheese’ and a mountain of the crispiest bacon all smothered in ketchup, mustard and mayo. For safe measures there was a Café 51’s signature deep fried chicken breast, cooked in their house made crumb, added to top it all off. Need I say more?
If you like beer, ice cream and redskins… Moon Dog Brewery is waiting! Located in Abbotsford, Moon Dog specializes in beers that aren’t your every day run of the mill. If you’re a little picky when it comes to your beverages, the staff at Moon Dog will happily let you sample any of their beers on tap to see which one is your favourite. Being a sucker for sweets, we went with the Splice of Heaven IPA and the Imperial Redskins Stout and they tasted exactly like their titles! Splice of Heaven was tropical and creamy – a splice in drinkable form if you will. Imperial Redskins was a surprisingly dark beer but non the less amazing in taste. Not to mention the staff unwrapped 20,000 redskins by hand to get them into the brew! We’ll certainly cheers a redskin beer to that any day!
The only way to end the trip was to taste more of Melbourne’s burger scene, of course. Bringing the food coma holiday to a delicious end was 8 Bit in Footscray. 8 Bit is a funky burger joint that’s inspired by all things video games, given the venue has a very fun and up beat vibe! While their hotdogs were extremely tempting we couldn’t pass up the mouth watering burger list. Being a lover of the classics, I went for the perfected ‘8 Bit With Cheese’ while my counterpart ordered the ‘Double Dragon’ – featuring, as you might’ve guessed, double beef, double cheese and double bacon along with pickles, lettuce, mustard, 8 Bit sauce and the added chicken for safe measures. While both burgers were amazing and I’m already planning my next trip back to munch on some more, the real winner here were their loaded fries! French fries mixed with chilli beef, cheese sauce, bacon, pickle relish, grilled onions and jalapenos with chipotle mayo is enough to make my stomach rumble!
Of course, Melbourne is riddled with cute cafes, laneway bars, burger joints, food trucks and culinary delights on every corner, so we couldn’t include all of our favourites, just the ones we really really want to come to Brisbane! We’ll see you three soon, yeah?
