A new initiative, called the Mini Makers Market, was launched last week at Hawthorne’s Love Your Local Markets to give kids the opportunity to set up a table at the growing market and sell their creative endeavours to the community.
Debuting on Friday afternoon at 4pm a selection of origami, artwork, illustrated picture books and hair clips were among many other products created and ready to be sold by the mini entrepreneurs. Under the supervision of their parents and with the support of the local community, the mini makers got a taste of commerce in a safe and controlled environment, clearly proud of their efforts as the basked in the praise of happy market wanderers.
Founder Rebecca Lawrence and her business partner Melissa Hoedel said the initiative was to create exposure for kids and enable them to think BIG in an encouraging atmosphere.
Rebecca said the idea was for “kids to come and have the experience, its not for them to make money. It’s not profiteering. It’s for them to be creative entrepreneurs and they’re learning.”
“They’ve got to learn about presenting it and pricing it and how to deal with strangers when they talk to you. There’s so much they can learn from it.”
Rebecca said the initiative grew after a little girl asked them if she could have a stall and with no opportunity present, the pair created one. And thus came the debut of the Mini Makers Market last Friday.
That sense of community opportunity and spirit is the very essence of the Love Your Local Markets, where the sole focus is on supporting the community and providing an entertaining space that locals can call their own.
“We called it Love Your Local Markets because that is what we wanted it to be – ‘our’ markets, my local market,” Rebecca said.
“It’s very much a community market. It’s a lifestyle boutique that we started to support the local community and businesses that are in the community.”
Rebecca said they are “trying to build a destination for people to come to and make it an event that the families can come to. You’ll notice from 4pm it’s kid friendly, and after 6pm the kids go home and the workers come and they’ve got somewhere to go.”
“We’re trying to create that third space where you can go when you don’t want to go to the pub or to a restaurant; when you want to see your friends but don’t want to spend a fortune,” she said.
Rebecca said the response from the public has been great, with many businesses and members of the community supporting the local endeavor each month both as patrons and stallholders.
And with their first birthday on the horizon there is no doubt the Love Your Local Markets are slowing down any time soon, especially with their move from a Sunday fair to the Friday night twilight market and the addition of a number of new stalls each month.
So without further ado here is a snapshot of some of the stallholders and delicious foodie stands you’ll find at the Love Your Local Markets, happening on the first Friday of each month.
