Being a girl is tough, I get it, we have to deal with a lot and that’s not even touching the surface. That is why we have complied a list of what we like to call “busy call life hacks.” Essentially, they’re shortcuts to get you through the day, whatever that entails. Hold on tight ladies, this may just change your life (or at the very least, it’ll save you 10 minutes each day and make you more comfortable to carry on being the awesome gal that you are).
NO NETFLIX NO!
Hack: When deadlines are looming, change your Netflix password.
I’m not sure about you, but Netflix has definitely taken over my life in the last few months since it launched here in Australia. When uni assignments and other projects rolled around I had no other choice but to confiscate my own Netflix account (heartbreaking I know). To do so, I got a trustworthy friend (you could also use your partner or sibling too) to change the password on my account so I could knuckle under and get stuff done in the lead up to the end of semester one. It worked, and I survived, but it was as equally hard as it was effective. Now that holidays are here, Netflix and I have reunited and we’re catching up on lost time by re-watching the entire series of Gossip Girl.
Hack: Drink a glass of warm water and lemon in the morning
To feel on top of the world every day, drink a glass of water with a slice of lemon in it. It helps with digestion, destroying bacteria, cleanses the system and boosts the immune system. If you do it first thing in the morning, you’ll be ready to tackle the day in no time. Don’t forget, you should be drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, so a glass first thing in the morning is a good way to start.
THE DREADED JEANS
Hack: Freeze wash your jeans.
I am facing a current problem where all my jeans are loosing their colour, especially the skinny black jeans that are now charcoal at best, light grey at worst. I was yet to solve this problem, until I turned to good-ol’ good for a solution. When you want to freshen up a pair of jean, pop them in a plastic bag, tie it in a knot and put in the freezer. Magic happens and all of the germs are killed and the colour remains intact (however this sadly won’t work for stains or marks). It’s quick, easy and good for the environment, but you should still put them through the wash every so often because stains aren’t attractive, ever.
THE BRALETTE BABE
Hack: Wear a bralette instead of bra.
The almighty bra is a constant uncomfortable necessity we have to deal with everyday, but recently I have been getting into the bralette as an alternative option to the traditional bra. And I tell you, I never thought freedom could feel so comfortable. I have been loving the bralette option for a long time now and always reach for them over my bra when I get dressed each morning. Hack: Put baby powder in your shoes to keep them stink free.
Some shoes are just not meant to be worn with socks (blame fashion) and with the painful sacrifice of comfort, breaking in new shoes can leave you with very stinky sore feet. Applying baby powder to the insides of you shoes will eliminate all smells and keep them fresher for longer when you’re out and about sock-free. Hack: Always have your gym bag packed
If you’re one for making excuses to avoid exercising, try to eliminate all of the things that stand in the way of fitting in a workout in the afternoon or doing it first up in the morning. Avoid going home after work (because let’s face it, you won’t leave again) and always have a packed gym bag in the car or under your desk so you can go straight to the gym on your way home to save you time and give you no excuse to avoid a sweat session. If you like to workout in the morning, lay your gear out the night before so it is ready to go in the morning before you change your mind. I like to keep a water bottle, gym towel, shoes, workout gear, a sports bra and headphones on call at all times to ensure I stick to my routine. Hack: Use after shave as a primer.
If you’re like me and struggle with making your day-to-day makeup last without it rubbing off and appearing blotchy after a couple of hours, I have a (rather strange but effective) solution for you. The ‘Nivea For Men – Post Shave Balm’ is a beauty secret I have been hearing about for awhile, so I asked a friend who is a makeup artist what all of the fuss is about. I can guarantee you, it actually works (I have two on my shelf at the moment incase one runs out). Applying a thing layer of the post shave balm before applying makeup will assist in keeping your makeup in place and acts like any other primer that you would buy for the same solution.
Hack: Make breakfast the night before in a mason jar.
If you are like me and struggle to find the time for breakfast in the morning because that extra 20 minutes sleep is just more important for your daily spirit, then here is a breakfast life hack you’ll love. To help you save time in the morning and ensure you don’t skip the most important meal of the day, your breakfast in advance and pop it in a sealed container (bonus points for using a quite mason jar) and you can run out the door with breakfast in your hand to eat en route to your destination. We love putting bircher muesli, granola and yoghurt or a filling smoothie in a jar the night before and grabbing it on the way to the bus as we run out the door. THE MOTIVATION METHOD
Hack: Set motivational quotes as screen savers.
Having trouble finding the motivation to exercise, study for an exam of plot away at your creative pursuit? Then this life hack is for you! Find an inspirational quote that speaks to you and make it your laptop and phone screen saver to remind you everyday to work to reach your goals. Whether that be exercising, eating a more wholesome diet, practising kindness or working hard on personal project, find something that motivates you to keep on doing it. BUS WAY BOOSTER
Hack: Get off the bus a stop early and walk the rest of the way.
We know it’s cliche, but if you catch the bus or train to work, university or school, get into the habit of getting off a stop early and walking the rest of the way home. It will help you clear your mind and contributes to your 30minutes of exercise each day – every step counts!
Hack: Use your straightener as an iron
When on holidays, on a business trip or stranded at your boyfriends sans iron, use your hair straightener to fix all of the creases in your clothes. It may seem nerve-wracking to take to your clothes with a straightener, but it works, trust us. In fact, Danielle is doing it right now on a daily basis while in New York for business!
