July at the Movies

The past few months have been a little slow at the movies, but no longer! July is always a great time for new releases and this year is no exception. Here are the ones to look out for this month!

Spiderman: Homecoming

Perhaps more boy than man, the new reworking of the classic Spiderman tale sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) at an earlier point in his life, at 15 years of age and as eager to please as a puppy. Taken under the wing of Tony Stark, Spiderman yearns to prove himself in order to make the Avengers team. Half coming of age story, half superhero movie, Spiderman: Homecoming is a non-threatening, fun film that is enjoyable and easy to watch. A few twists in the plot were surprisingly smart, and Parker’s character is as witty and loveable as always. Definitely one to watch.

Baby Driver

Arguably one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Directed by the one and only Edgar Wright- this one is set to blow your socks off. The story follows Baby (Ansel Elgort), a talented getaway driver who works for Doc (Kevin Spacey), a mastermind heist planner, in order to pay back his debt after stealing his car. A little known fun fact is the story of Baby Driver came from a Mint Royale video clip that Wright directed in 2011 which stars Noel Fielding. Like many of Wright’s films, Baby Driver features a kick-ass soundtrack which is expertly choreographed with the action on screen to create an exciting, fast-paced adventure.

The Beguiled

A southern feminist psychodrama. Now I bet you’ve never seen one of those! Based on the 1966 novel and adapted by Sophia Coppola is the tale of a badly wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrel) in enemy territory who accepts the help of a ladies boarding school (Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning). Cue crazy drama, sexual tension and dangerous rivalry. Said to be Coppola’s bloodiest, most visceral film to date, it’s a twisted tale not to be missed.

Dunkirk

Another film this month from another great director- this one directed by Christopher Nolan is highly anticipated and is in a completely different direction than anything else he’s worked on. This one grabs you from the second your butt hits the seat and doesn’t let up until the credits roll. An exciting and interesting retelling of the fateful battle of Dunkirk where more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from Dunkirk in France. If action films are your jam, this one’s for you!
