Whimsical and a play on what is seen and at once… unseen. We spend 5 minutes with recent QUT Fashion graduate Emily McGuire on her final year collection, fashion and life after uni.

Collection Name: Dream Scream for Autumn/Winter 2012

Collection inspiration: My collection was inspired by the intersection at the dream state and waking state experienced as one awakens from a dream.  I researched heavily into surrealist ethos and games, as well as abstract and expressionist art.

So you’ve finished uni… what now?

I’m in the process of developing a new project to be launched in July, involving myself in local arts events and gaining industry experience at other Australian brands. I have some figurative illustrations on display at the Brisbane Square Library at the moment until the end of April. I hope to return to New York City at the end of the year.

If you could be mentored by any fashion authority in the world, who would it be?

I would love to be mentored by Alber Elbaz from Lanvin.

What would be your first question of them?

“What is your favourite novel of all time?”

What do you think your biggest challenge will be now?

Finding paid work!  Interns make the world go ’round.

How do you think living in Brisbane will influence your next career steps?

The creative community in Brisbane is tight-knit and growing rapidly, which is great for promoting and gaining support for your work.  This has definitely motivated me to continue with my latest projects.

What do you want the world to know about you?

That I believe there is no greater satisfaction in life than that felt from doing something yourself.

If I was a genie and could grant you 3 wishes… what would they be?

I’d wish for no animal cruelty across the world, to see my dog more often and an apartment on West 21st street.
