Lately things have been piling up at work and a long weekend, was LONG overdue. I had a short, but definite list of requirements when choosing the destination… somewhere far enough away, but still close to home… a view of the ocean and chance to enjoy the sun, some light-shopping and some heavy-cocktails! Cairns scored top marks on all fronts so within a few clicks I had everything booked and was counting down the days… And boy did the beautiful sea-side city live up to my high expectations.
While I wish I could have packed each of you in my suitcase to share the experience… you’ll just have to settle for a sneak peek of my itinerary and photo-diary instead! Enjoy!
Cheap ‘n’ Chic… Airline Jetstar has been the pick of the bunch for the best priced fare to Cairns and getting me there smoothly and safely!
We stayed at the fabulous Rydges Esplanade and were greeted by one of their fabulous staff members who gave us the grand tour and politely left us to kick off the weekend. The room was perfect; spacious, clean, a luxurious bed and a fabulous view of the ocean! Which basically ticks off all of my top priorities when looking for holiday accommodation. The hotel features 3 resort-style swimming pools perfect for lazing the afternoon away with friends or family. If you are into your fitness (and just can’t be without a treadmill for the weekend) there are also tennis courts and a health & fitness centre free for hotel guests.
The hotel has rooms to suit singles, couples and have recently introduced new ‘family rooms’ to accommodate all the kids in comfort.
Both nights were a dream but I won’t lie.. when I wake up in the morning the first thing on my mind is coffee… and I simply can’t bear instant… so I wandered down to the hotel’s restaurant CHB Restaurant and Bar, ordered a take-away flat-white and crossed my fingers. Turns out Rydges ALSO have fabulous barista’s on staff! I was so impressed that I didn’t even need to leave the hotel to be treated to fabulous coffee, a scrumptious breakfast and a friendly chat!
Nothing beats a relaxing walk along Cairns Esplanade. You can almost be guaranteed of a sunny day in Cairns no matter what time of year. And last weekend was no exception; blue skies, sun and gorgeous scenery!
Serendipitously the annual Cairns Festival was on last weekend, which meant market stalls; live bands; fun for the kids and beanbag stations on the esplanade!
And I found the cutest little jewellery stall where everything was made with local natural seeds!
My favourite spot in Cairns for cheeky afternoon drinks is definitely Salt House, situated on Marina Point right next to the Cairns Yacht Club. I just can’t decide whether I love the panoramic view of the ocean, marina and city or the cocktails the most!
