Spotlight On: Christie Millinery

We loved having a little chat with with the just darling Christie from Christie Millinery about all things Spring racing, cocktails, coffee and fashion! Now bring on the Melbourne Cup! My money is on ‘Rekindling’.

What is the inspiration behind Christie Millinery?

Much of my design inspiration comes from nature, but I’m always trying to bring a modern, sculptural twist to my designs.  I grew up surrounded by nature and the outdoors, and lived in Japan for a year when I was 16, so I think all of these things have influenced my design aesthetic.

How does Christie Millinery stand out from the crown?

Designs that are modern, fresh, and sophisticated.  I’m a certified Milliner, so use traditional skills to construct high quality headwear, with a modern twist.

TGINF!! (N=nearly #amiright) What’s your drink of choice? Cocktail? Coffee or Tea or Wine?

I’m definitely a Shiraz girl with dinner but love my G&Ts on a hot summers day!

With the Spring Racing Carnival is about to kickoff, what trends can we can expect?

Headwraps are the hottest trend for the Spring Carnival.  We’ll also see lots of embellished crowns and alice bands and wide-brimmed straw hats trackside this Spring!

Where do you gather your inspiration?

Where I draw my inspiration comes from the theme of the collection that I’m working on at the time.  I spend time researching on the internet, using WGSN (trend forecasting website) and often end up outdoors and in art galleries, or SLQ to do more research. I never run out of ideas, I truly find inspiration everywhere I look!

Describe your daily style?

Chic, relaxed

How do you wind down on the weekend?

Spending time with family and friends, either at the beach, art galleries, or going for hikes.

Christie, you’re a graduate of the fashion accelerator program at QUT Creative Enterprise Australia, can you tell us a little bit about this process?

CEA’s fashion accelerator program has been instrumental to my success to date.  I knew my industry and skillset but had no idea how to grow or scale a fashion business. They helped me to build a solid foundation on which to launch, in addition to providing mentoring through some pretty big projects, including my collaboration with Australian label ‘CAMILLA’ last year. I would be lost without them.

Are you a globe trekker? We love to know what countries have inspired you?

I am! Travel just gets under your skin! I’ve travelled through the UK, Europe and Thailand, and have lived in Japan for a year, in addition to Canada and USA for just over 3 years.

Finally, we’re all massive coffee lovers here at BT… so what is your go-to coffee / go – top coffee spot?

I’m a bit of a Campos lover, so you can’t beat Campos off James Street, or Bakers Arms at the Gabba!

Tell us something we would be surprised to hear about you?

That I have a Masters in Physiotherapy. Surprise!

And finally what’s next for Christie Millinery

I’m working on some really excited modern manufacturing processes at the moment, which no one else is doing around the world. I’m looking to bring these in to my first Bridal RTW collection, set to launch next February 2018 – watch this space!
