Throughout the month of May, Calexico Australia have been celebrating all things denim for ‘Denim Month’ to raise awareness for Jeans for Genes. Last week Calexico held an in store Denim Workshop for their loyal shoppers at the James Street boutique and special guest Will Allan, from Citizens of Humanity, was there to speak about all things denim, how to wear different styles and what works best on your body type.

The morning kicked off with happy shoppers trying on piles of Calexico denim while nibbling on gorgeous cupcakes inspired by the wardrobe staple we have come to know and love. It was every denim lovers dream come true!

Shortly after, Will talked us through how we can really rock every style of denim this winter. For Will, the look that is really making a comeback is the flared jean circa 1970.  Will admitted that he never expected the flare style to grace the sidewalks quite so soon, however he said he is pleasantly thrilled about all things wide leg for winter 2015.

If you’re one of those ladies who steers clear of flares for the fear of excess denim bunching awkwardly at the feet, fear not. Will said the typical flare – tight at the top and flared below the calf – actually lengthens your legs (we love them pair with a heeled ankle boot for a couple of extra centimetres), so if you’re a short gal join me in praise and embrace flares this winter, for Mr Will Allan is a jean-ious!

The boyfriend style is also set to continue its reign as a major trend of the coming season, but this time around the style is cleaner and slimmer than we have seen in the past. Opting for a pair that is slightly fitted and lacking in rips, the folk at Calexico created a feminine look while still giving off borrowed-from-the-boyfriend vibes.

Will also confirmed something that we firmly believe in despite the controversy…. and that’s double denim. Denim on denim is BACK and is here for the long haul people! The trick to really pulling off the 90’s trend a la Britney and K-Fed is to put your lighter denim shades on top and leave the your darker hues for the bottom half. This adds a bit more character to the look rather than having the same shades throughout the entire outfit. If you’re a first timer with the trend, Will suggests putting a striped top or even a plain white tee poking out from your denim jacket to break up the blue a little bit. It’s all about baby steps!

Before the event, I thought I had a handle on denim – they’re just jeans after all! But upon leaving I felt empowered with what Will had shared with us and have never felt more determined to find my perfect pair. To top off the perfect morning, a donation was made to Jeans for Genes with every purchase made in store. This year Jeans for Genes day is on Friday 7 August 2015 – to get your workplace involved or to donate, simply head to http://www.jeansforgenes.org.au/.
