Last week North Lakes local Michael Cainero was crowned the winner of the BBQ episode of Network Ten’s Recipe to Riches after his homemade showstopper – “The King of Sausages” – came out on top.
$10,000 later and in the running to take out the grand prize of $100,000 and a life-changing partnership with Woolworths, Michael is one very happy man.
So what was the winning combination? Pork, apple and cinnamon sausages, that’s what! (How delicious does that sound!)
Michael’s cinnamon-infused snags beat gourmet infused butters and a beef ball san choy bow recipe to sit on the shelves of more than 900 Woolworths stores around the country for the Australia public to cast their vote.
Michael said inspiration for the winning combo came from his family and Italian heritage.
“We were having a roast pork dinner with apple sauce, and my wife Melissa asked why don’t we try that in a sausage. So we got that down pat then we said a little cinnamon might work.”
“My Italian family has made traditional pork sausages my whole life and we wanted to come up with something a bit different.”
Different they certainly did. And I fail to believe it’s a one off for the Brisbane local; in fact I feel sure Michael has a host of deliciously quirky sausage recipes up his sleeve, ready to wow carnivores in Brisbane and beyond.
In terms of the prize money and his snags future, family-man Michael has big plans.
“We have a mortgage so we’ll put some towards that and Camp Quality is close to our heart so some will definitely go to that.
“If I do not win the contract with Woolworths I will also put some towards setting up my own business from home.”
“I would love to get my healthy sausages out to the public long term with Woolworths and maybe more of our healthy foods and knowledge. My dream is to have a sausage and cured meats business of my own.
High-five to you Michael!
To support Michael’s quest to take out the top gong, head in to your local Woolworths (or online) and chow down some pork, apple and cinnamon sausages for dinner this week. But hurry, they’re only available until stocks last.
A little bit about Recipe to Riches:
Recipe to Riches builds on Woolworths promise to turn ideas into reality, giving everyday Australians the opportunity to transform their home recipes into commercial products as the journey from kitchen to supermarket shelf unfolds.
Mentored by acclaimed marketing expert Russel Howcroft, Three Blue Ducks chef Darren Robertson, Carman’s Fine Foods founder Carolyn Creswell and Woolworths’ Director of Customer Experience Jess Gill, contestants battle it out in themed cook-offs in the hope their unique recipe will please the taste buds and pass the commercial judgement of the expert panel.
As Michael said, “Recipe to Riches not only gave me the opportunity to showcase my recipe but now I’m in with a chance to win a life changing partnership with Woolworths.”
