Whether you have your own private ensuite (you lucky girl!) or you share with siblings, friends or your other half, bathrooms can be a chaotic and cluttered space instead of a relaxing sanctuary. If you are anything like me, your cupboards and drawers are overflowing with products and beauty tools, yet only a handful are faithfully relied on for my everyday beauty routine. But do you think I could part with the small army of products and tools that occupy the space in my bathroom – no way!
I’m a hoarder, so I can almost guarantee that there are products in my bathroom that are a number of years old. So I did what I should have been doing for years and did a big clean-out of my beauty haul, sorting everything into two piles – the essential items and the not-so-essential clutter.
To bring you this feature, I joined forces with RY.com.au, an online beauty store that sells everything you could possibly need when it comes to beauty products. They’ve got tools for your hair, serums for your skin and products that will highlight your gorgeous natural features, so stop by and have a look around. The best part about RY is that free shipping is available when you spend $99, they are based on the Gold Coast so your goodies will be delivered in no time, they only sell authentic brands and there’s a decent sale section (shop it here). They’ve also just acquired FacialCo.com.au too, so share the love over there too for all of your skincare and beauty needs.
Inspired by the RY range, I did a stocktake on my own bathroom (both the real and fantasy versions) and compiled my findings into this post – the ultimate guide to bathroom essentials. We’re talking about the real-girl stuff that makes your bathroom functional and chic. So go forth and give your bathroom the clean out and restock it deserves and give these 12 things pride of place!
GOOD SKINCARE PRODUCTS – Skincare products are often bought generically with a one-size-fits-all approach. However skincare products should be purchased on a case by case basis, and you really need to find one that does good for your skin, inside and out. RY stocks some great brands in its range including Skinstitut, Dermalogica, Coast to Coast, Asap and Alpha-H, so start by researching them and checking their ingredients list.
QUALITY MAKEUP – Good quality make up should be in every gals arsenal of go-to products on a daily basis. If you have a couple of good products, they’ll get you through every occasion with ease and you’ll find you don’t need the excessive stash that is hidden in drawers and beauty cases. Ditch all of the cheap, generic brands that don’t work and splash your cash on some good quality makeup products. All you’ll need is a good foundation, mascara, bronzer, blush, eyeliner and an everyday eyeshadow palette in natural hues. That’s it! They’ll last longer in the jar and on your face, and the ingredients are often more wholesome too.
MAKEUP REMOVERS – If you are prone to leaving your makeup on at night when you get home late, take note, because after I’m done with you, you’ll never do it again (I hope). Sleeping with your makeup on results in your pores and oil glands becoming clogged, dehydrated skin, the renewal process is prevented, skin ages considerably faster, eye irritations and infections can form, breakouts are more common and the skin cannot rejuvenate. What’s worse, is that when you leave your makeup on overnight then you are allowing your skin to marinate in all of the germs, oil and debris that has collected throughout the day. Horrified yet? You should be! If you do happen to have a big night and stumble into bed without your makeup wipes (gasp), the first thing you should do in the morning is wash, cleanse (twice) and apply a face mask to get the healing process started stat.

MOISTURISER – The first beauty tip I ever truly learned and took on board was to master the art of moisturising morning and night, especially in the winter months when your skin dries out more than usual. You’ll need a good hydrating moisturiser for your face (check out the Coastal Lightweight Moisture Lotion by Coast to Coast here) and another full body lotion that works well with your skin and is the perfect balance so that your skin is neither dry or oily. You may need to try a few before you find the perfect one, but I can guarantee that when you do, the experimenting will be well worth it and your skin will feel silky smooth morning and night. Tip: keep your moisturiser on the bench to remind you to use it as often as possible.
HAIR CARE PRODUCTS – Hair products, especially shampoo and conditioner, are often on high rotation and need to be replaced monthly because you use a large amount on a regular basis. Because it is something that you buy alot, we often reach for the cheapest brand or the supermarket special to save some cash, however it is not always the best solution for your hair and scalp. Invest in good quality products and you will find that you use less and the product itself is more effective. Ditch the slew of hair products that occupy the cupboard and instead have a good shampoo, conditioner, dry scalp treatment, heat protecting serum and one or two styling products to help your hair hold it’s shape. The Moroccanoil range has a good selection of hair products if you don’t know where to start.
EXFOLIATING MITS – Exfoliating is perhaps just as important as moisturising, however we often forget about it in our rush out the door or to bed. Make it super easy by having an exfoliating mit or sponge in the shower so you have no excuses. You can use an exfoliating scrub a couple of times a week, or just use your normal body wash and an exfoliating mit and rub lightly in a circular motion on your arms and legs. For your face, opt for a specialised face exfoliating scrub that is gentle on sensitive areas. Tip: always exfoliate before using tanning products as it will make the tan last longer and appear more natural.
TANNING – Speaking of tanning, get a healthy glow from the bottle and protect your skin from the harsh Queensland sun when you are outdoors. Always keep your tanning products in the bathroom (fake tan and carpets definitely do not match), because you never know when an impromptu miniskirt occasion will be pop up, so always be prepared. I personally love the JBronze range and I’ve also heard good things about the St Tropez Luke Dry Oil.

HAIR STRAIGHTENER – The beloved hair straightener – a girls best friend for life from the ripe age of 14. After a couple of misadventures when the straightening iron met with my wild, curly teenage hair, I know a thing of two about hair straighteners. Just recently I upgraded to the rose gold special edition GHD straightener (pictured below and available here) and it is the best dang beauty product I ever did buy (and the most expensive too might I add). It’s lightweight and easy to pack up for a night away, looks gorgeous sitting on my bathroom bench top, heats up within 30 seconds and it does a brilliant job on my hair. We’re officially BFF’s. Tip: Did you know you can also use your hair straightener to iron your clothes when you don’t have an iron on hand? See this post for all the deets.
RANGE OF BRUSHES – I’m still not into the beauty brushes thing (yet), but any beauty editor or makeup artist will tell you that brushes make the difference between a good makeup look, and a great one. Next time it comes to replacing your brush set, opt for quality over quantity and just get the shapes you use most often to start with and slowly build your collection. If you’ve invested in good brushes, make sure you also have a brush cleaning serum on hand and use it every two weeks to clean them (trust me, you don’t want to know what’s on the end of those things).
NAIL POLISH REMOVER – It’s one of those things that you always need, but never seem to have on hand when your nail colour is chipped and looking worn. For a quick and easy touch up, wipe clean with nail polish remover and start again with a fresh slick of paint. It also doesn’t hurt to have a couple of different nail polish colours on rotation too.

COZY TOWELS – I love beauty products and am thrilled to have narrowed down my top 10 bathroom collection so that I only have the uncluttered, everyday products and tools in my lady room. So now, to my other favourite thing – homewares! I drew a little inspiration from the beautiful bathrooms of Pinterest and have decided every stylish and functional bathroom must have a gorgeous set of cozy towels and a plush bath mat. Soft black ones complement a white tiled bathroom if you’re style is minimalist, and if you prefer a splash of colour, a chic set in pastels or clashing prints will do the trick.
DIRTY CLOTHES BASKET – Finally, as old fashioned as it sounds, you need a dirty clothes basket. Say goodbye to the mountain of discarded clothes and towels that occupy the bathroom corner and find a dirty clothes basket that looks like a feature rather than a home for worn clothes. And while we’re on the topic – when it is full, actually do your washing woman!
So that’s it – 12 bathroom essentials you must have on hand around the clock to keep your skin silky smooth, your makeup flawless and your lady space looking chic and tidy. Now it’s over to you – what’s your tips, tricks and handy hints when it comes to bathroom essentials? We’d love to hear them in the comments below.
