A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend a Feasting Table & Craft Beer Appreciation Class at the Woolly Mammoth Alehouse. Hosted by awarded beer writer and educator Matt Kirkegaard, I was more than impressed with his knowledge, the bar’s atmosphere, the fit-out, the food and the seemingly endless variety of craft beer. I was so impressed that I’ve taken a few friends there since, boasting that the Woolly Mammoth is now MY place to go for a feed and drink.

The Woolly Mammoth Alehouse is located where the old Mustang bar was, next to Cloudland in Fortitude Valley. The Alehouse is found on the bottom floor and is Queensland’s largest tap beer experience. This also contains my new favourite toy, the 14-foot shuffleboard. Upstairs is the Garden Bar, bright with an astroturf floor, a giant Jenga set and an indoor bocce set… I feel like The Garden Bar could become the new place to go for a Sunday sesh.

The tasting event was downstairs at The Craft Bar. Decked out with leather booth seating in a warm wood and brick exposed setting, The Craft Bar has a selection of 23 different craft beers. It was at the event that I learnt of the different varieties of craft beer, the origins of different tastes and I now know that my beer is best when I’m chewing on a chicken wing or have a mouthful of Woolly Mammoth’s unbelievable Braised Beef Ribs. After finding my new favourite beer, the Croft Pomegranate Saison, you can only imagine how excited I was to hear that Kirkegaard will be hosting more tasting events here.

There is so much more to craft beer than I’d first thought and the team at the Woolly Mammoth is more than happy to help you find your next favourite beer. Their friendly suggestions only made the experience better, and that is one of the reasons I keep going back.

For the beer enthusiast, I would suggest that you keep an eye out for future events like this or if you’re thinking of having an event of your own, make sure you look into The Woolly Mammoth’s different packages. Oh, and while you’re there, make sure you take the time to name their giant Mammoth.
