Ask a Stylist: Winter Weddings

winter wedding

Q. What can I wear to a wedding in Winter?

Autumn/ Winter is definitely a favourite time of year to get married and with this comes the dreaded ‘what to wear’ and ‘how to stay warm’ issue.

I have quite a few weddings to attend in the coming months so naturally I’ve found myself scouting the stores in the hope for something that ticks all of the following requirements:-

  • Stylish
  • Warm
  • Dress Code Appropriate
  • Within My Personal Style

I can tell you … Its not easy finding something that comes close to ticking even 2 of those boxes, let alone every single requirement. Generally, I find it both incredibly easy and rewarding to shop for others and extremely hard to shop for myself – That’s right, the Stylist needs her own Stylist! (I’m sure this is the same theory as the painter who never takes the time to paint his own house) Maybe it comes down to me being too picky or simply not having the patience to ensure that I look as good as my clients. Whatever it is … I thought I’d do a little post and pretend that I’m on the hunt for a client which in turn will give me some stylish ideas too and alas it worked …

Ask a Stylist: Swimwear from the pool to the city!

How Can I Take Swimwear From The Pool To The City?

Over the past few weeks, I’ve thrown myself into a challenge …

I’ve started working alongside swimwear retail store Bikini Island Carindale and what a whirlwind it’s been. Bikini Island are also located on the Gold Coast however due to Carindale being it’s first Brisbane store I thought it was important to challenge the perception that people have of Swimwear – No longer are our swimmers only useful for pool/ beach visits. In fact, they are the perfect piece to take us from day to night!

The demographic of the Carindale store is a little more, shall we say ‘upmarket’, therefore with this comes a certain standard to dress. I make it my personal mission to transform each customer’s way of thinking by showing them how to style their swimwear in order to reduce the cost per wear of that particular item. The response has been absolutely amazing – In fact, I had a lady come in just last week who asked for myself especially and told me that she had been referred to Bikini Island Carindale by 4 women in her family who have also spoken with me in the past couple of weeks. This for me, is the icing on the cake! There is nothing I love more than a heartfelt referral – It is the brains of my business and the reason it’s still standing today!

So if you’re ever closeby to Westfield Carindale … Come in and see me! I’d love to fit you and help you find your perfect style before Spring/ Summer hits our shores! Winter is the best time to buy swimwear due to the fact that most products go on SALE; it’s just a horrible time to try it on given it can be a bit chilly.

Ask a Stylist: The Turtleneck!

Q. How Can I Pull Off THE Turtleneck?

I’ve said it on here before and I’ll say it again … I LOVE Turtlenecks!

I have so many different colours including neutrals and brights and find that they give an outfit a real polished, chic feel.

I know you’re probably sitting there comparing the ribbed turtlenecks that you once paired with you’re favourite overalls and thinking I’ve gone completely mad but I assure you the ‘NEW’ turtlneck is slim-line, ultra modern and stylish.

To back me up even further with this statement; I’m going to share with you my favourite turtlenecks. I purchase them from none other than VICTORIA SECRET. They come in an amazing array of colours, they’re super cheap and the fit is perfect. If those angels can rock a turtleneck, so can you!

I generally wear my turtlenecks with a great fitted pair of jeans however to spice things up a little, I’ve produced a few different looks for you to also consider this Autumn/ Winter 2012.

Ask a Stylist: Work Fashion Fix-its!

Q. What Fashion ‘Fix-Its’ Should I Keep At Work?

It is true that we spend the majority of our week at work yet we seem to keep all of our fashion fix-its and crisis solvers tucked away at home.

It’s inevitable that last minute rips, tears and spills will occur at some stage thoughout the working week so why not be prepared? I understand we can’t exactly wheel a mobile clothing rack and a replica of an Ikea showroom into the office but there is an easy, clever alternative to being sartorially prepared in the event of a fashion emergency. Today, I have put together a list of the fashion fix-its that I stored at my desk when I worked in a corporate environment. I’ll tell you what … I  thanked my lucky stars on MANY occassions that I’d had a few of these items on hand.

So pour a cup of tea and hit those spreadsheets while knowing that if a fashion catastrophe were to occur, you would be completely armed and ready for it.

Q. How do I wear a Button Up Blouse?

Another wardrobe basic item that we all know and love … The Button Up Blouse.

Although, more commonly associated with ‘work attire’, the Button Up Blouse is an incredibly versatile piece which can be worn over and over and over again to create several different looks. To be honest, I rarely use my Button Up Blouse for work meetings/ events; I tend to wear it more frequently as a casual outfit to ensure my look doesn’t come across too sloppy & under-dressed.

Having said this, here is my take on some super-stylish ways to rock your Button Up Blouse, no matter what the fabric, print or style might be …

Ask a Stylist: Floral Pants

Q. How can I wear this Season’s Hottest Trend – Floral Pants?

Floral Pants are popping up in almost ALL retail outlets and online stores however the majority of my clients, admit to being a bit spooked by the trend and can’t stand the thought of feeling like they’ve left the house in their best ‘green thumb’ ensemble.

In my opinion, floral pants are FABULOUS. Not only do they create a terrific statement but they usually comprise of a few different colours therefore become a piece of cake to style in many different ways with many different garments. Better yet, flaunting a floral pair of pants will allow you to tone down the rest of your look and make it look like you’ve spent hours that morning getting ready for the day ahead.

To tackle those floral pant fears, I’ve found a few different options & have styled 5 different looks to ensure that most occasions are covered. Happy Floral Pant Shopping!

Ask a Stylist: Create several stylish looks with JEANS

Q. How can we transform our jeans to create several stylish looks?

JEANS …

I would happily bet my bottom dollar that if I was to scour every wardrobe both Australian and International (even male or female), that a pair of jeans would be the re-occuring piece that continually pops up in each wardrobe.

We all have a pair, some of us even have multiple pairs but as a general guide, they are used more commonly as an option to ‘slap together’ an outfit rather than a well thought-out look.

With this in mind, I thought it was about time that our everyday jeans receive the credit they deserve so I’ve put together many ways in which to style your jeans to produce a variety of fabulous, stylish outfits.

So dust off that denim, it’s time to get creative …For garment inspiration check out my full post here…

Ask a Stylist: Fake the perfect hourglass figure.

hourglass

Q. How can we use clothing to ‘fake’ the perfect hourglass figure?

There is a reason that the women of the 1940’s continue to capture our attention. For me personally, these women are my style icons and it goes without saying that almost ALL women of that era strived to achieve that ‘perfect’ hourglass figure whether they were blessed with that body shape or not.

It also goes without saying, that our male counterparts are automatically drawn to a more feminine, curvier body shape – One with a little shape up top and a little shape down below. The perfect balance of body proportions!

For most of us not born with that ‘hourglass’ silhouette; you’ll be pleased to know that there are MULTIPLE ways in which you can use clothing to your advantage and ‘fake’ that seemingly perfect hourglass shape.

Let’s take a step back in time and incorporate some style tips from those women of the early 1940’s – A decade in which women took the time, the pride and a sense of creativity to produce the best possible versions of themselves day in and day out.

When did Rochadames boutique open its doors and what was your motivation to open your own boutique?

Rochadames opened late November, 2010. It was a really exciting (and scary) venture for me. I’d worked in retail for great companies like Sportsgirl since I was 14 but never really saw it as a career goal. However, when I went into fashion design and wholesale fashion I really missed the customer interaction. As much as I love spending my days with gorgeous clothes, it’s really the girls coming in that make me love my job so much.

The name Rochadames definitely stands out! How did you come about naming your blog and boutique?

I was originally going to call the store Kult Boutique but after a bit of confusion with people thinking it was a gothic clothing store I thought a change of name might be a good idea. Rochadames (pronounced rock-a-dames) came about when I was trying to decide on a fashion label name a few years ago. I was on Facebook and noticed a friend had changed his surname to be hyphenated as Rochas-Adames. I misread it as Rochadames and just thought it was a really cool name that leaves meaning open to the imagination. I asked his permission, he said he would be flattered and the rest is history.

What designers do you currently stock, and what designers seem to be your best sellers?

Currently we have Nookie, Cameo, Style Stalker, Evil Twin, Somedays Lovin, Millie Loves Min and Indiana by Freda in store. We have many more gorgeous labels coming throughout the year such as Joveeba, One Teaspoon, Kuku, Blessed are the Meek and The Story Of.

(cont..) Style Stalker is definitely one of our best sellers. Their past few collections have been very trend driven and I love that they offer girls a high fashion look for a reasonable price.

One of my personal favorite labels is ‘Indiana By Freda’. It’s an amazing label out of Melbourne that incorporates a lot of beautiful prints and hand-dyed fabrics. Their collections have a real bohemian goddess vibe that I think is so perfect for Queensland girls.

Your blog showcases your inspiration and love of fashion. Is there anyone that you look to for style inspiration?

It’s a bit cliché but I do love the Olsen twins. After spending the majority of their childhood in matching outfits I think it’s so great to see that they both have such a strong individual sense of style, and they’re not afraid to have fun with fashion.

Nicole Richie is another person who I admire style wise. Her personal style has evolved so drastically over the past few years. We’ve seen her evolve from a trashy teenager flashing her bits at catwalk shows into a fabulous style icon and fashion designer. I think it’s inspiring because it shows that style isn’t necessarily something you’re born with.. It’s something we develop with age as we become more comfortable and confident in ourselves.

What considerations do you take in when choosing and buying the next season collections?

I think since the financial crisis that price remains a big issue. We don’t pull out our money as fast as we used to, so if something is a higher price point I want it to be a ‘must have’ piece that the girls die for.

Fashion trends are another big thing. The general feel of Rochadames is city girl meets boho babe, but I do try to incorporate trends that I have seen on the catwalk or that seem to be really having an effect on street style overseas.

Rochadames1

What type of girl do you find browsing the racks at Rochadames?

Toowong is a really diverse area and being such a new store I don’t think we have a certain ‘type’ yet. But all my customers so far from regulars to girls who walk in from the street have just been really cool girls. They’re confident, friendly and they all love to have a good gossip and giggle.

If I had to describe an ideal Rochadames girl though, she’d be the type of girl who gets excited when she finds out the new Russh or Vogue has hit the stands or stays up all night scouring fashion blogs. She dresses for herself and not others, and knows that when she looks great she feels amazing.

With the cooler months ahead, what trends do you see for the winter season?

Leather jackets have been big for a few years now and I think designers this season have really upped their game in the style stakes by making them a lot more trend based such as the big aviator style jackets, and really making an emphasis on new shapes and embellishments so the customer can justify another jacket. We’re also (cont..) going to be seeing a lot of leather detailing whether it be on collars or cuffs, and leather pants are definitely still making a comeback.

We’re lucky to have a warmer winter then our southern counterparts because sheer fabrics are also going to be huge and with our warmer climate we can get away with minimal layering.

Color wise khaki is definitely hanging around for another season, and we’re starting to see bursts of mustard and navy which I love. And don’t pack away your leopard print just yet, because it’s definitely going to still be around for another season or two!

Are there any sales or special offers available for shoppers at Rochadames?

We currently have up to 60% off on our summer stock online and in store to make way for our amazing new winter pieces! Another exciting promotion that we’re going to be offering at our Toowong store is 10% off for all students in the month of March.
