NEW BOUTIQUE: Ra Ra Superstar

posted by Danielle Lewis September 26, 2010 1 Comment

Eclectic, young & fun fashion label Ra Ra Superstar mixes up vintage style with a fashion aesthetic to create wearable clothes to get you noticed.

Ra Ra Superstar is the brainchild of Kathy Szwedzinski, a former stylist who began her fashion career in New York. After moving back to Sydney she continued a successful styling career, yet still needed an outlet for her vintage obsession. So ‘Ra Ra Superstar’, the vintage boutique in Bondi Beach was opened, stocking an overflowing array of fabulous, fashion relevant vintage & accessories.

A label of the same name was soon born as Kathy used her closets of vintage fabric to create gorgeous party dresses for the shop. Proving to be a big hit the label quickly grew to include cute day wear & quirky separates. Influenced by Bondi’s casual chic aesthetic and relaxed lifestyle the label is a quintessential collection of seasonal ‘must haves’ that not everyone else will have.

Closing the Sydney shop in 2009 Kathy is now based in Brisbane and has just opened a new vintage & designer boutique in Brisbane’s Paddington (284 Given Tce).

We highly recommend you pop your fedora on your little head and wander down to Ra Ra Superstar for some vintage heaven!

You know, I knew Brisbane’s vintage scene was solid… but I didn’t realise just how impressive it was until putting together this list! There is literally something for everyone… cheap ‘n’ chic; fine jewellery, band tees; costume-worthy; collectables; shoes-to-die-for; and a whole lot of giving back, sustainability and community love x

Here are my faves….

These guys have a t-shirt collection the size of … well it’s massive ok! Even cooler than that their boutique also serves as a gallery space for local artists.  And it is run by some of the coolest people in Brisbane I know. Kudos for them supporting their local creative community! Love!

La Bella Donna – Morningside

A reader favourite La Bella Donna is located in Morningside and sources amazing product from private sellers, estate sales and collectors of genuine vintage. If you are in the market for a unique piece or have a few of your own you’d like to sell, this is the place!

Sunday Social – Fortitude Valley

A Winn Lane favourite that keeps making appearances on Brisbane Threads – like here and here. Sunday Social keeps us coming back for the carefully curated selection of awesomeness. Seriously cool chicks, with some seriously cool threads.

Do You Even Trivia? Where It’s At For Trivia In Brisbane

posted by Gabi Tang December 4, 2015 0 comments

Do you like tasty eats, delicious drinks, guaranteed fun and a chance to win some sweet prizes?  Trivia nights are where it’s at, people, and we’ve done the legwork to find out where you can head for trivia in Brisbane when the urge is strong.

Popular with the Paddington-ers and surrounds, Kettle & Tin’s regular Tuesday Trivia is a barrel of laughs with the Man Vs Bear crew taking you through the rounds for the chance to win their weekly jackpot. Paired with weekly meal specials and a tipple, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to trivia at the K-Tin*

Archive at West End also serves up some trivia fun on Tuesday evenings to go with their delightful brews so take a break from that pool game to spend that gold coin on a few rounds of trivia instead. Plus you can totally order one of their tasty meals to chow down on while racking your brain.

Or if you’re more geographically oriented towards the Valley, The Flying Cock have you sorted with their Tuesday Trivia & Tacos. That’s right, fuel yourself with $25 DIY tacos and fight for the right to their sweet jackpot….currently up to over $2000. Think about how many tacos you could eat with THAT.

On Hump Day, dead down to Escobar for some trivia that is guaranteed to give you something to look forward to for those first two painful days of the week…or perhaps that’s their infamous bathtub gin. Either way, you can get both on Wednesday evenings from 7pm. Or if evenings are less do-able, Pig n Whistle Riverside do a speedy lunchtime trivia so grab your workmates for a pub lunch and impress them with your superstar knowledge.

If beer and burgers are your fuel of choice, hit up Grill’d Emporium for a juicy burger before getting down to business. Or if you’re hanging Southside, the Quiz Meisters crew are rocking The Fox with their hilarious special brand of pub trivia or join Man Vs Bear at Shady Palms for some top trivia and tipples.

For some special themed trivia, check out the Embassy to see when their next monthly trivia event is on. I’m still bummed that I missed their Fast and the Furious one…oh Vin!

Moose & Gibson are making Thursday Trivia happen along with beer and burgers on the first Thursday evenings of the month with five rounds of brain-teasing fun.

So there you go trivia aficionados and potential trivia-addicts. Go forth and trivia and make use of those countless hours trawling Wikipedia and random websites, learning what some might call useless fact. Now, you can claim them as the key to trivia glory.

* Bonus points if you know where this reference stemmed from.

Do you know a great, regular night of trivia in Brisbane? Hit us up in the comments below, we know there’s more out there!

Forever 21 is Here!

posted by Teagan West October 16, 2014 0 comments

Cult US fashion label Forever 21 opened its doors this morning in Brisbane (finally!) for the first time in Australia.

The new store, located in Queen Street Mall under Brisbane’s new NEXT hotel, spans 1900 square metres over two levels of the latest fashions in womenswear, menswear, plus size, kids and active clothing.

Each section of the store is dedicated to a different style, from activewear, festival must-haves, nightlife dresses and workwear, to basics, denim and teen fashion.

And with a focus on ‘affordable LA fashion delivered daily,’ Forever 21 is fast fashion at its finest, with new products constantly made and allocated globally.

The doors swung open at 10am this morning after Founder and Global CEO Don Chang officially opened the store with teen superstar Alli Simpson and Lisa Hyde from the Bachelor stylishly in tow.

The line of eager shoppers snaked its way through the Queen Street Mall, some waking before the sun to be the first in line (they arrived at 5.40am!) for what was definitely the extravaganza they expected.

Way to go Brisbane! We are set to be fashionably ahead of Australia’s stylish southerners (eat your heart out Sydney and Melbourne), having exclusive access to Forever 21’s summer collection full of colourful prints, bold patterns and textured pieces – perfect staples for the sunshine state. Hooray!

To my surprise, the price is definitely right, with basics and a large denim collection retailing from $4.80 to $15 and blouses, skirts, pants, tailored shorts and more averaging $30 a piece, not bad for fast fashion straight from the U.S.

There’s also a whole collection of shoes, bags, jewellery, accessories and underwear to complete your new outfit, all at very competitive prices.

The good value price points added to the hysteria, and I must say I was among hundreds of crazed women muttering (some screeching) “OMG that’s $28? I’m so getting that” while tossing things into the mesh carry bags.

You’re in for a well deserved treat ladies, so got forth and welcome Forever 21 to town!

What’s all the fuss about?

Forever 21 has become a retail giant since Mr Chang opened Fashion 21 in downtown LA in 1984. And now, as Forever 21, the label has grown to over 600 retail stores worldwide, form heavyweight fashion capitals in Europe and the United States to Hong Kong, Colombia, Mexico, Singapore, United Arab Emirates and Japan. Our new Brisbane store now resides in a funky place alongside them all.
